NH TN70D stuck in 4WD

I was mowing a few weeks ago with my New Holland TN70D tractor. As usual I was mowing in two wheel drive which I normally do unless conditions warrant otherwise. I was just about finished when I noticed that the 4WD indicator was lit. I determined that indeed the tractor was in 4WD. I tried rocking the switch to no avail. Otherwise the tractor seems to operate normally.

Anybody have any ideas what may have happened? Is this a common problem with these tractors (I have owned this one since new in 2000)?

Mechanical or hydraulic engagement of 4wd? If it's hydraulic you can have lost pressure or an electrical fault. Quite normal that it stays in 4wd if pressure are lost or the solenoid have no power.

Not sure if the actuator si mechanical of hydraulic. I will have to check. So you are saying that if the actuator fails, it fails in the 4WD mode?

Have you tried reversing the tractor to unbind the axles ? Uneven tyre pressure and tyre wear can cause this to happen . If that is all OK , a stick has pulled the wire terminal off the solenoid on the left hand side of the transmission case .

Thanks Eagleview, yes I have tried reversing the tractor to unbind the axels. Could be uneven tire pressures (or size) as one rear tire is original and the other side is just a few years old. Very likely it is a wire off the solenoid. I will check that.

G'day check the brake light switch as they go into 4wd when you put your foot on the brake.

Thanks Jon, I knew that when you step on the brakes it goes into 4WD. I was not sure if the brake light switch actuated this function or some other sensor down the line. I will also check it.
