NH TC35D Temperature Double Trouble

I have a NH TC35D and the first problem I ran into was the cold engine syndrome. I installed the shutoff valve in the drain line and the problem disappeared for about 3 weeks. After 3 weeks of bliss the problem reappeared. The only logical cause was an open thermostat. I removed the thermostat today and sure enough it was being held open by a small metal "flapper" valve. I'm not sure what this small metal flapper valve is for but I removed it with a Dremol tool. I reinstalled the thermostat and every thing works fine now. I thought I would pass this along in case anyone else suffered this dual problem with a single symptom.

Before they figured out the final fix (the valve), my dealership had replaced the thermostat too thinking that was the problem. I guess they pretty regularly remove the little metal "flapper" you mentioned before installing new thermostats - just because of the exact problem you described. Pretty common on the skid steers as well. Glad to here you were able to re-use your old thermostat - I would have never even thought to do that. If that ever happens to me I probably will though. It is one of those minor things you can do yourself in less time than calling the dealer & getting it fixed. Just wondering though - did you re-use the gasket too???

I think (and my memory is vague-been a long time) the 'flapper valve' you removed is only used to prevent reverse-flow of coolant when you use a lower radiator hose engine heater. (You want the heated coolant to flow thru the block and not the radiator). Removal shouldn't cause any problems.
