Tiller Newby question: Which is better forward rotating tiller or reverse?

/ Newby question: Which is better forward rotating tiller or reverse? #11
My forward has worked for me. I only know one person with a reverse and it cover the tractor all in dirt. I wouldnt want one.

I have had 2 Land Pride reverse rotation tillers and neither one of them would do that.... unless I take the front shield off.

Don't need no veeedeeoes......

Reverse rotating does a better job for the most part but takes more tractor since it's pulling the opposite direction of your forward movement. Forward rotation works fine, but ejects material behind. Still don't recall seeing one that does counter rotation like walk behinds.

I've never seen a tiller that has tines turning in different directions at the same time.

Forward rotation turns the same direction as the drive wheels.
Counter rotation turns the opposite direction as the drive wheels.
Dual rotation is switchable between forward and reverse rotation, but it can't do both directions at the same time.

I bought a Bush Hog brand reverse tine tiller last year, and it does a good job. The main reason I bought it was, I went through the same thought process. But, with this one, if I didn't like the reverse rotation, it takes a bit of work you can flip the gear box, and tiller shaft end for end, and make it a forward rotation tiller. It's not like if you bought a forward rotating one, and are stuck with it, or have to trade for another.

I don't remember what brand his was. I know it wasn't a LP and I did not pay attention to it to see if it had a shield or rubber or what if anything in the front.. For my application even if no dirt thrown I think id stick with fwd rotation. If I was just doing my own little garden spot I might would try one but. I do a little tilling on the side, and put in a few food plots where I could be pulling up rocks and roots and jamming a reverse rotation model.

I only buy forward turning tillers, it's waaaay too easy to over till a garden with a reverse tiller. Most nubes over till their garden soil in the first place, so no need to make it even worse.

I've been doing custom tilling for many years, and I can't see any problem with a forward turning tiller, I think there are other things much more important than that, to look for.

I bought this reverse rotation Blecavator about 10 years ago at a school district auction for $200. It is made in England and weighs about 900#. It not only reverse tills but it has an adjustable comb behind the tines. After the tiller passes the loose soil passes through the tines and the rocks and debris fall in the depression behind the tines. It then has a following screed which levels the soil and finally a compactor drum that levels some more and introduces divots that aerate and hold water. It takes every bit off my B7800s 23 HP PTO to run it.

I was Facilities Manager for the district and knew what it was. There were no other bids. Shudda bid $100. New ones are about $15,000 now.

I have a friend that works for a guy who goes to auctions at school districts and municipalities and buys stuff by the skid-load and hauls it back to a warehouse. Then, in their off-time, anytime work is slow, they order pizza, and start going through it:
- Anything useful to them gets saved.
- Anything else that might be of any value, gets photographed and sold on e-bay.
- Anything that's not sellable gets scrapped.

They make enough money to make it worth their time.
