Tiller Newb question: Can I get by with just a rototiller?

Others have already offered sound opinions...
What you might want to consider is a "bedder/hiller"...they are not expensive and it really helps with drainage etc...Hilled rows give the roots more depth of loosened soil too...

Till it, hill it, plant it....!

I would have to agree with the above posts. I have a 15hp tractor with a 48" tiller and it is all I've used on my gardens & food plots since I bought it, nearly 20 years ago. I don't till any deeper than about 4-6". I do think a subsoiler would be a good idea though.

I do custom tilling for gardeners and farmers with my 3 point tillers. Most use nothing before or after I get there because my tiller does such a good job.

Keep in mind, you can "over till" soil and ruin the soil structure, I see it in gardens all the time! Many home owners just keep tilling, pounding their soil into dust! lol

That's a good point about over tilling the soil. I try not to over work the soil but do need it to be fine on the top surface.
I was at an NRCS meeting and this soil structure was discussed at length.
