I used our new 6 foot Woods flail mower for the first time and noticed a very pronounced shimmy right from the start. It is a new unit. I expected operation to be smoother. Unfortunately, the dealer is 70 miles away. I was planning to mount it back on the tractor, lift it and check blades for free movement. Should I take the blades off and weigh them? Other ideas?

Is it only at start up? If so then it's normal. The blades need to straighten out since they are free swiveling and require centrifugal force to straighten out (spinning). You should always start the cutter at idle to help this out. If it is still shaking after it's up to speed then something is out of balance or bent.

^ What Mike said - start cutter at idle & engage PTO s-l-o-w-l-y, if that's possible. Quick engagement can snap the blades back, where they may bind and remain. My blades get harder to swivel the further they get from being straight, making them resist straightening until RPMs are higher or I mow something substantial ...

Flail or rotary cutter?

Sounds as though some of the blades may be stuck in the non-extended position. If its new you certainly would not expect bent blades. It does sound like something is definitely out of balance.

Rotary, Brushbull isn't a flail mower.
