New Tractor owner in search of Diesel gas containers

Flo-Fast has a nice assortment of fuel jugs and accessories.

Not cheap but good quality cans that have vents and can be set up with a pump or for fast pour.

"Legally speaking", you MUST use an approved YELLOW container for diesel.

The codes for hazardous fuels/materials have changed since the old days. All newer diesel cans are yellow by statute. It's a good idea to buy a newer can anyway.

An officer or fire marshall "can" cite you for transporting, storing, or dispensing fuel into an unauthorized container... but you're not likely to run into that problem.... unless you live in the foreign country of tree-huggin' hippy statutes known as California.

On the flip side... should you find one of the old cans of a different color, you can still legally use it as long as it retains the original painted-on warning or stamped/emobossed designation.

I live in the "foreign country of tree-huggin hippy statutes". I have three diesel engines I run - but don't really use too much fuel - so my only dedicated diesel can is an old steel 5 gallon blitz can. GI style - but original yellow color for diesel. Completely illegal in Kalifornia - no modern jim-jam overfill protection/anti-spill valve. I have never been challenged when filling it. It's still a little frustrating that I can't legally buy a replacement spout or even a gasket in this state!

You can't even legally use old gas cans in California? You can't buy the old style cans here, but I've never heard of a law to prevent using them. If they did you can bet I still won't be using the new stupid cans.

SR, I may have missed it, if you said. Do you fill the 2-1/2 gal Rotella jugs at retail station pumps?

Attendants in our area would probably come running out, waving their arms if I tried it!
Yes, that's what I do... If you are a worry wart about it, just park so it's hard for them to see you...

Personally, I don't worry about it too much...

I don't think the place that sells farm diesel cares what you pump into. After all how many people show up to buy farm diesel with an approved container? The other place where I usually buy fuel conveniently put ethanol free pumps on every pump and the diesel pumps are at the far end where the attendant can't see what your pumping into. Then again I don't live in CA and I've never been given any trouble.

Not even at surplus?

While you're there, pick up at least one of these so your can will be useable and worth a crap. EZ-Pour Hi-Flo Replacement Spout - For Life Out Here

The extension is really handy if your fuel fill is up on top of the tractor like mine is. If not they have shorter ones too. They come with a vent you can add to the can. It's in the same section as the fuel cans.

What the heck!!! Does that thing fit the "No Spill" cans, the type where you have to push and hold the stupid button? I curse that can every time I use it because it takes a ridiculously long time to pour 5 gallons. I'd almost rather spill diesel all over my hood with my old cans, then stand there with my thumb cramping holding that stupid button in on a no-spill can. Please tell me it fits!!!

I took the button protector off my no spill cans. Now I can at least use the palm of my hand to hold down the button. I do believe the no spill brand are the best of the EPA compliment cans.

Nope.

No Spill cans have a much larger opening (and a handle at the back as well as the top) so you can dump the whole five gallons in about 10 seconds with a funnel.

The cheap jug we have from TSC takes longer because the opening is so much smaller. A vent would help: you can buy plastic vents for about a buck apiece, or use a valve stem with the inner body removed. Many videos on YouTube.
