I am going to buy my first tractor. I have been looking at a Kubota L2800HST. What model of John Deere would compare with this model? Is pricing for the two brands similar?

I love my Deere. But, when helping a buddy fid a tractor recently, we looked long and hard at the L2800HST. Right now, I doubt that you will find anything in Deere's linuep that is like it. Deere's 790 is a collar shift machine, while very nice, it would be hard to put it up against the L2800. Deere is supposed to be coming out with a new lineup in the 2000 series, which may well give you a good competitor to the Kubota. They are rumored to be announced in August. So, if you hurry up and buy an L2800HST you can be sure that Deere will annouce a new 2720 that will outperform it for somewhat less money (or at least that is what would happen to me!)

If you like the L2800HST, you will be happy with one, it is a great machine. Deere's 3000 series is money, but are more machine, as well, much more like the 'Bota Grand L lineup.

One side note, the L2800HST DOES have a live PTO, the gear version doesn't. A lot of folks missed thatr the HST version fixed what many to be a serious flaw in the L2800 gear.

Have fun!!!

Thanks Mike. Now I just have to be sure the 2800 is the right size. My woodlot which I am thinning does have a lot of trees fairly close together so not sure if I should go smaller or not. I wonder if the 2800 will be able to get the rootwads out of my 1' fir trees? I think I may try to pull them over part way and then see if bucket will lift the rootwad.

I have a l2800 hst and love it, I have been using it to rip out 15' high black bery bushes by the roots and it does a dam fine job. I am in the proccess of digging a pond with it now, and have found that it is really hard to dig in the hard pan, i think any tractor would have a hard time in hard pan. I just orderd a tooth bar for it, and from what I am told it will rip dam near anything out. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
