I just purchased a Yanmar M1700 that seemed to run great for the little time we let it run due to needing a freeze plug in the block. I replaced the freeze plug and started filling radiator with water. Well you guessed it water started pouring out of the fan mount. I look at it and its cracked. So with the freeze plug needing replaced and the water pump being cracked.... Is it safe to assume the block isn't cracked because it runs good? I'm not sure with these little 2 cylinder diesels. I think I may JB weld the Fan Mount until the one I ordered comes in just to see if I loose water else where. I got a really good deal on this tractor but I see why now.....lol But I'm going to bite the bullet and fix this tractor since these seem to be good little tractors. Any thoughts on what else I should be concerned about and to check? Thank you all for any info.

Yes its a YM1700, I was looking at that kit. I took the fan mount off this morning but I have to run into work for a few hours so when I get back Im going to JB Weld the mount and put back on to make sure there aren't any further issues with the head. Hopefully the Jb weld holds to test it out. Keeping my fingers crossed. How do these pump water without a water pump?

That's correct it a fan. I'm in Ga. and it hasn't been cold enough to bust out a freeze plug in Fla. in yrs. that I can recall. Big Red Flag. So It's really just the fan mount that has been broken and you replacing. Before I would put any money or much time in fixing it up I would run a pressure test of the cooling system. You can do it while your waiting on the new fan Bracket. You can rent one at a big chain auto parts or buy one. This is what you need to do it. Your pressuring up the radiator /Eng. Block to find leaks cracks more busted out freeze plugs Etc.. Since the Thermo Cycle isn't actually not putting much pressure on the the sys. it will be hard to find any more Damage. If you do this and don't find anymore damage besides the freeze plug. And being in Fla. in the summer with High Temps. I Highly recommend putting a water pump on it. With adding the cost of buying the bracket that you won't need it's not much more in cost to do it but so much more efficient. A water pump will pressure up the Sys. so your know you can handle the pressure. Not much to it and it will help keep the Motor running for yrs longer. Ok good news I JB welded the fan mount, filled with water and tested the pressure it did leak down a little bit but there was a little bit of water coming from the JB Weld. No water in oil and been using it to bush hog for about 2 hours now. Seems to be running good. She smokes a little bit but only under a good load. I ordered the part yesterday for the fan mount so maybe I can call them and get lucky and change the order to the water pump. Hopefully they haven't shipped it yet. I'm sure they haven't. Thank you all for the help. Also is there an adjustment for the clutch. Sometimes it doesn't seem to engage to switch gears and takes forever for the PTO to stop. IF I put PTO in N and then go into gear it does fine, when I try to switch gears with PTO engaged while pushing clutch it grinds a little. Any thoughts?

Put the pto in gear and try to spin the shaft by hand forward. If you can't then you need a PTO overun clutch. It will help alot. The intertia from the spinning mower is continuing to spin the pto and rear end. Whats happening is your having to wait until it slows down or stops before you can easily shift gears. The adapter to the shaft that will spin freely forward by the mower or by hand with it.
The Tractors pto shaft will still engage it to spin the mower. Hope that makes sence. Here is somewhat of a pic. of what to look for it has a splined shaft just like the tractor that you can't see and older clutch at that. Best I can d right now. Just search it and your find pics. of the new style and old like mine.

The Free play in the clutch or even if the clutch is new won't stop the shifting problem. The Gears are spinning or still moving. You can't stop that until the Mower or attachment stops spinning. That's why you need a Overrun clutch. With the clutch working properly as you stated without the PTO engaged I don't think I would mess with it. If it ain't broke then don't try to fix it. Plus These tractors are so old and worn Your not going to adj. the linkage to new factory standards. My YM2000 only has 1/8 free play in the pedal. Been like that for 8yrs. and 600hrs. Don't have the first issue with it for a good example. Just IMHO.

Thank you all for your help with the clutch. I think I'm just going to leave it be for now. I have noticed its burning oil and smoking when you throttle up. But when its under a load or working it doesn't smoke. There is also quite a bit of blow by coming from the crankcase vent hose. So I'm thinking a rebuild may be in my future. But with that being said, after 14 hours of runtime since I bought it it hasn't used any oil on the dipstick. I know its boring oil because I can smell it and its bluish smoke coming from the exhaust when I throttle up. Oh well for less than $2000 I can't complain..

When you throttle up smoke is normal. No Smoke under a load is Very good!! No visible leaks and no sign of use on the stick is also very good. Only bad is a lot of air out the Vent and smell of burnt oil. The air with no oil getting blown out may not be a big deal. It's a vent. The smell of Burnt oil is. Maybe running Hot. I would get the water pump in and flush the Radiator and see if it cools down which I would almost bet money it will. You may have a keeper. Like Neat 1500 said. Keep it Serv. take it easy on it and probably last another 20+yrs.. Keep the oil changed I use Fram-PH3593A pick it up at Walmart same filter for the YM1700 and 15-40 Diesel. A Fredricks dealer gave me the # and have been using them for Yrs..
