New to tractors.

I inherited a Jd 3032E and I don't know much about tractors. I cut the pto shaft on my new cutter too short so I am trying to measure the spline to get a new one. I measure just over a inch across. Is that a 1 3/8 spline is my question? Thanks for any help out there.

I assume you are referring to the shaft coming out of the back of the tractor? If so, then yes it is a 1 3/8" 6 spline shaft. Not sure what cutter you have, so not sure what size shaft is on that. Many times, it is 1 3/8" 6 spline also.

Yes I was asking about the back.The cutter is a frontier 48" so I assume it's a 1 3/8 also right?

A picture would help.

If it's a brush hog (one spindle with swing-away blades) then it will most likely be a smooth bore on the gear box with a shear pin designed to break if you hit something hard like a stump. Protects your tractor PTO from damage. If the cutter came with a slip clutch then it could be splined.

If you're talking a finish mower (3 blade spindles with a belt connecting them) then it could be either type because the belt can slip if you hit something.

At 48" on that size tractor I would guess that it is a brush hog and it is a smooth bore on the mower end. Just a guess though!

Smooth, it uses a shear pin (bolt)

I would suggest you watch some videos on youtube that show how to shorten the PTO shaft. Particularly the video by EverythingAttachments.com with Ted Corriher. May be too late this time, but if you ever need it again, you'll know how to do it properly. Good luck.
