So I dug the SA 200 out of the back of the pole barn. It seems that it was last used about 8 years ago on a building an indoor arena project.

I have never welded before...

Is this a good machine for me to learn to weld with?

What should I do to this long neglected machine to get it up and running again?

I have 5 SA-200's. Can you post a picture of your new machine? Or post the serial number off the face plate and I can tell you the year.

there is one in the local classifieds, for $100. The ad says complete SA-200 for parts, mostly in pieces. To me that means "I found a really big problem, that I cant fix/will cost way too much to fix", that and it is a 3 hour drive away, has stopped me from buying it.

I will take a pict of it this evening and try to find a serial number. It is parked in the garage at home at the moment.
I need to get it going fairly soon or I will be forced to give up it's parking space and head it back to the barn. :)

Before you crank it over! I'd check the generator for rat's nest, and any broken wires. Make sure all 8 main brushes are free in there holders, and the 2 exciter brushes. Then remove the spark plugs and spray some WD-40 in the cylinders. Then see if there is spark from the mag. If so, drain and replace the gas. Crank it over a few times to blow the excess WD-40 out of the cylinders, replace the spark plugs, and then see if it will fire off. That should keep you busy for an hour or so.:D

THanks for advice.

I am sure that if it sets in the garage for more than a week without visible progress the wife will banish it back to the pole barn.

I will post a serial number this evening.

If there is no spark, simply cleaning up the points was what worked for me.
