John Deere 650
Well guys this is my second thread here in the forums and I am glad to report that my first problem with the JD 650 is solved! Big shout out to Mike aka thepumpguysc ! I had issues with my tractor idling and wanting to run away from me, after some talking back and forth trial and error on my part, he offered to look at my injector pump and see what he could do. I got the pump back today and after a quick installation and bleeding it is alive and seems to be running fine! While the pump was away being repaired I unseized the frozen brake adjuster arms, installed new shoes and different drums. One drum was frozen/rusted in place and was a nightmare to remove but its good now.

This is my first tractor I am refurbishing on my own and now I am wondering whets next? I know I need to replace the hydraulic fluid with JD Hy guard fluid? I see that it looks milky colored. I am guessing there is a maybe a screen or two to clean and a drain plug I need to find.

Who knows how long the engine oil has been since it's been changed so I will put changing that and a filter on the list to do.

I really suspect that the cap is the culprit. It is badly degraded and worn, and I have been told that it was kept outside for years. The seal on that cap can't have kept any moisture out of the oil and the repeated condensation couldn't have been good.

Ouch that filter is over $100!!

Congratulations, those are nice tractors and well worth the time & effort spent on refurbishing in my opinion!

I've had my 1986 Ford 1310 4x4 for about 28 years and would just like to mention something I learned about it's transmission oil drains:

Mine has four "transmission" oil drains and uses the same oil for transmission, hydraulics, steering & the rear end gears.
In my experience if there are several drain plugs, all of them should be opened & drained at about the same time if possible, because there is bound to be some fine metal sitting in those low spots and I wanted it out!

There could be enough fine metal to block the drain, depending whether they have been previously opened or not?

It may even take a poke with screwdriver to get a flow...

JD 650 may have a different drain(s), but I think it's worth checking it out before opening any drains.

Your JD650 is really a Yanmar YM series tractor in green paint.

You can save up to 2/3rds the cost on parts buying Yanmar parts vs. JD green marked up priced parts.

The YTOG has many parts suppliers for Yanmar made machines for Deere, Toro, Cub Cadet, Komatsu, RK, etc.

Also the YTOG has the manuals for free.

Milky means water in the oil. Try to find where it came from and correct that problem.

from JD parts

Filter element key #23 in attached file
Is that transmission filter cleanable, or does it have to be replaced? I found that the John Deere website has them cheaper than EBay and Amazon, seems like a lot of money for a throw away filter. I’m not sure so thought I’d ask before dropping the money to buy a new one.

The hydraulic screen mesh filter is re-usable and cleanable. A gallon of diesel and a soft toothbrush typically.
