That's on my to buy list. Nice set up.

have had my mind set on one but just need to get good at using it. didn't like the liquid
set up so changing it to my liking with flow moniters and a better pressure ajustabilty valving

One of the nicest setups I've seen. The liquid fertilizer option will be extremely helpful once you get it perfected. The one thing I don't like about my 71 planter is the lack of the ability to put fertilizer beside the row during planting.

I'm curious about the fertilizer set up. Is it just gravity fed?. I have a old injection (John Blue, I think) for injecting application. Do you not need a pump? bjr

no there is a pump at 20psi should put down 15gal an acre, I am still in
the process of getting it set up, im having a fab shop make me up a nice stalk
to mount my flow moniters , so I can easly see from the seat to verify there all getting
juice.would do it myself but but layed up with a bike accident at the moment haven't been to work in over a yr

That is a really nice planter you have set up. Just out of curiosity do you know if a planter unit from a John Deere 290 will fit on a 71 flex base. I see some guy selling lower units of a 71 but no seed hopper or base to the planter.

if im correct a 290 is a shoe type planter wear as the 71 is a double disc so I would not think they are compatible not really
sure tho

You are correct about the delivery system but I believe the seed plates are interchangeable that why I was kind of curious as to whether the hoppers and assembly were interchangeable.

I have a 290 right now but the double disc opener on the 71 is a lot more forgiving on seedbed prep that why I been considering on transitioning over.

you are correct the hopper itself may be interchangeable they do take the same plates, you would almost need to try a 290 hopper to a 71 base

Just curious, after planting, is cultivating going to be possible with the 2 outside units planting in the wheel tracks?
would a 2 row setup between the wheel tracks work better for possible use of a cultivator for weed control?

first off my tractor is set up a little diff as rear tire spacing wont allow it to navigate 30'' rows which is what the planters are set at so therefore the outer planters ride just to the outer edge of rear tire track not uptimum but 30'' rows is whare its at for corn and soybeans and RR corn can just be sprayed, also this is mainly just for food plots so no cultivating lol and at two row with 30'' spacing would be to the inside tire tracks, we are splitin hairs but with a good weed control plan starting out will have little problem with weeds if the corn gets a good start with the liquid starter fertilizer it gets up before weeds can get ahold the corn or beans will over power the weeds by growing faster and if weeds become a problem can always spray but keep in mind this is mostly used for food plots for wildlife, the starter fertilizer will be a great benefit

You didn't mention use was food plot and not garden production. It is a good looking rig that should lay the seed down like a pro. The liquid fertilizer will help but might not be enough for corn. Some of the commercial liquids are designed to 'feed' growing plants. A soil test will tell what is needed to get corn to maturity. Weed control is always the key to any crop, commercial or food plot.
I have a 2 row IH 900 new to me planter for corn food plots and have been racking my brain to figure out how to get fertilizer under or next to the row without broadcasting granular, which feeds everything especially unwanted grass and weeds. Thought about what you have done as the best way, but true liquid fertilizer requires some specific equipment to deliver into the ground and the tank mix type may not be enough for the growing plant. I am planning on growing 'grassy corn' for waterfowl/ deer. I need a small grain producing crop in the rows after the corn gets big enough not to be smothered out. With Waterfowl, no crop manipulation can occur to get feed on ground as in mowing or knocking down with ATV, etc. Hoping deer will do that prior to putting 4-6" water on it. Deer will stand in water to feed on ear corn that is not wet.
I would like to follow your progress when you plant and I will be glad to share any of my success/failures as well.
Please continue this thread
Thanks

keedeep thanks for your post as far as the special equip, thought about adding another culter just for the liquid to put it 2'' off to side would require another incorporated tool bar, nope to much hassel instead ill be using MONTYS liquid starter fertilizer they say can be directly sprayed on the seed so im spraying directly into the double disc opener, will see. after my liquid system is complete im going to hit MONTYS up for further support local co-op says rep will come out to advise. sounds like you could broad cast something like oats drag in, plant a short 60 day corn with planter over top of the oats, once everything is up flood, 6'' water should allow ducks to almost reach the ears of a short varity of corn. a soil test is always the key. my quad can run 30'' rows to use a foiler type of liquid fertilizer in spray rig with less getting to weed and more to crop. happy to share my exp. with ya also interested on you results. I have a batch of corn that I just broad cast with tilled in urea is going gangbusters almost head high now have not sprayed for weeds but got up before the weeds can be trouble

Sounds like MONTYS may be a option to look in to. My problem is the Delta has been so wet that most field work has been impossible, especially in natural wet areas like I use for the duck holes. Heck, even the deer fields that normally stay dry got under water after over 15" of rain in 30 days. All the ditches backed up and by the time any water drained off, it would rain 3-4" and fill them back up.
The weeds have really been hard to control as once they burn down, its too wet to disk them in. I tried some no-till Sunflowers in RU burned field and got a good stand but within 2 weeks the grasses had took off. Hope the SF can stay ahead of it. The no-till planter places fertilizer under the seed so maybe it will make a decent dove field. It plants on 20" rows and I can't use a cultivator with it either. Usually just use to plant deer mix around the edges of fields after soybeans are harvested and drill jap millet and oats into established moist soil areas and usually get really good stands with one pass planting.

Last year drilled deer mix in cut beanfield

that's a pretty neat planting set up, water def sounds like a problem for you, lots of flooding throughout the Midwest this yr , sounds like your safe from it. standing water tens to disapate nitrogen. last yr mix looks great in your checker board planting, thought your planter picture would come up but posted link what ever
