Hiya,

The "start at 1/2 throttle" is a common generic Diesel starting procedure. I checked my manuals for Cummins and Detroit engines and they are just the same. I start all my Diesels with the throttle at idle or with a very slight opening. (the over the road trucks seem to like just a touch of throttle)

I was told many years ago by a Diesel wrench tech that the open throttle startup was for the old Detroit 53 and 71 series with roots superchargers. He said that the engines depended on boost to light off the rest of the cylinders when cold and the easiest way to do that was to have RPM's as soon as one fired.

That's exactly how I start my 2520- at idle.

Same here, and no problems starting so far. I must admit the only reason I started doing it that way is because you are told not to apply throttle when starting vehicles with fuel injection, so I assumed a fuel injected tractor would be the same.

JD2520, I'm just curious if you've ever tried starting yours at idle setting, and, if so, do you still have lots of smoke?
