New Mahindra Trucks

   / New Mahindra Trucks #101
Last February, on the heels of the earthquake, I spent some time in Port Au Prince (been going down for years). We had a chance to buy a Mahindra diesel pickup, which was a typical Haitian truck- rode hard and put up wet. It was for sale because it wouldn't run, and the idea was that we would tow it back to where we were staying, and see if we could get her runnning. Then, we would talk deal. So, we had a good chance to crawl all over one. Mind you, it was an older truck- I believe it was a mid 90's. Double cab, 4 cylinder diesel, heavy as all get out. I was not impressed, especially considering the environment in Haiti. For the weight of the truck (mass to move and stop), it was built marginally. I personally would not want 5,000 pounds behind it. The drivetrain was standard design stuff, but not built heavy enough to serve the weight of the truck. The front axle was tiny, the engine was very archaic and "thrown together", and there were designs that were just completely against good logic. The fuel tank, for instance. It was probably 10 gallon, and hung down as low as the rear axle- it definitely was in harms way.
Overall, I had expected a truck which would be designed with practical, solid logic features, and didn't find that. I am not saying that this new truck isn't a better truck, but in general, what I expect from a truck, and the design line that Mahindra took, were very different. I personally would have to look very closely at the truck before I would consider buying it. And, it would need to be out for a while, to see how it holds up, what kinks there are, and how Mahindra runs their auto business.
A final thought- it was a VERY heavy truck to try and move with a 4 cylinder diesel. We did get it running, but it had major cooling issues. What little driving we did, it was a slug.
I have pictures.

Did the chicken come with the deal?

Ha! I wondered if anyone would notice. Actually, the chicken came with a truck. The chicken was a better deal.

Mahindra TR40 Rated at a Disappointing 19/21 MPG

So much for an exciting small diesel pickup. I bet a full size half ton with a de-rated Cummins will do better than that...

Dmace,
My 2002 Ram 2500 gets 20-22 mpg on the highway going to and from work. My 2003 Ram 3500 dually get averages 19.6 mpg down the highway going to and from work. All stock.

These engines are already highly de-rated from their larger parents in commerical trucks. I would imagine all the new diesels will suffer with lower MPGs with all the emissions now. That is why I haven't bought a 2007 or newer Cummins.
hugs, Brandi

Exactly my point, even in a large heavy non-aerodynamic truck like a heavy duty RAM you can get 18-20 mpg. Now those engines can still be de-rated even more and still be efficient. Drop it down to about 300hp/450lb.ft, maybe switch to UREA injection and put it in a 5,000lb RAM 1500 and it will get 25+mpg easily.

Those are some pretty depressing numbers.

Highway milage on the Hilux 3.0 is 33 mpg .23 City.

Dmace,
My Ram 2500 is down around 300hp/450lb.ft. I think it has 325 hp. It is an awesome engine:thumbsup: to play with..........just throw a few G notes at it and swap it back to stock each year for annual inspections for the new cer trucks. I plan some MPG mods to the Dually when I sale the Ram 2500.;)

In the US, it's the Toyota Tacoma but you can't get the 4-cyl diesel engines which is why they get the good fuel mileage and a little truck with 170hp/260lb.ft. and all we get is over-regulation causing food shortages and lower fuel mileage...

It's either 245hp/505lb.ft. (standard) or 305hp/555lb.ft (high output) and yes those old 5.9l Cummins were great for stock mpg's or making ridiculous amounts of power if you don't care about mpg's. :D

I saw one of the Mahindra Pickups today!

I'm visiting Quito, Ecuador. A Mahindra pickup came down the street and I recognized it but didn't think it was anything unusual - until as it passed I remembered this is the model that is phantom, vaporware, in the US. All we ever saw to prove it exists was those initial ads. I don't think there ever was one on the street in the US aside from those ad campaign photos.

Ok, they exist, and are sold to the public here. I was 5 ft from one.
