I was in AutoZone the other day picking up an air filter for my 7.3 PowerStroke and was talking to the manager about the new twin turbo engine that is replacing the lame 6.0 debacle. I was under the impression that the new engine was going to be manufactured by International but he was quite sure it is a Cummings. Anyone have any skinny on this?

The new 6.4 diesel is built by navistar same as 6.0,7.3 and the 6.9 before it...

Twin sequential turbos with 350hp and 650 ft lbs..... yummy... :)

Nah, he was dreaming. Cummins has the contract with Dodge.

There are a couple companies out there that fix Fords though. They figured out how to put Cummins in them :D

The 6.4L is definitly a Navistar engine.. Its a derivitive of the 6.0L with many changes, the most important being common rail injection rather than HEUI.. Rather than a "twin" turbo, its a dual stage for a large boost range without turbo lag..

Diesel motors should be INLINE.

Hopefully Ford does not have the problems with the new motor like they did with the 6.0.

Hey now. There's nothing wrong with a good old 2 stroke Detroit. :)

They are loud though. There's an 8V in the water tender at the station. You can't hear yourself think when doing pumping operations. Flow the same amount of water from the Engine with a 350hp Cummins, and although there is motor noise, it is much quieter.

That was the best part about the 2 stroke Detroit. The lovely noise they make. Nothing made before or after them has ever sounded so good. Not to mention how reliable they were. One reason they were used so much in fire truck applications.

Those 2-stroke 8v92's are about bullet proof but as Diesel Power said, you just can't hear your self think, and your ears will ring when you get done driving.

Our front line fire engine at my station has a Detroit series 60, bunches of power and torque. I had to take a reserve engine over to another station that 8v92 was noisy as could be.

We road and drove around in those things with no hearing protection for 7-8 years before we got head sets.

Our first out/staffed engine is a newer Ferrara with a 350hp Cummins. 2nd out/volunteer engine is an '89 Ford 8000 with a Cat3208. The water tender has the Detriot 8V.

My favorite is the big Cummins. That Engine runs good. The Ford buildup with the Cat 3208 is under powered. Unfortunately, that is about the biggest thing you can fit in those chassis. The Cat runs good, but that Engine could use a bigger motor. The Tender does run good, but it is loud. It also has a different power band than the Cummins.

Our station has had headsets since before I became a volunteer in '99. I can imagine what it was like without them though!
