new engine ping

Have a new 4110 and notice an engine ping by my left knee until it is warmed up. I have no problem warming it up (even when it is not really cold out) but just want to receive some input on whether or not this is typical. Oil level is fine by the way.
Since it is under warranty for 2 years, I will bring it in to the dealer over the summer when their "busy season" ends so I won't have to part with it for so long. I am just curious until then.

If by "ping" you mean a knocking sound, this is quite normal for a diesel. Depending on whether the injection timing is automatically advanced in the cold (as with my 990), you might get a pretty loud knocking when you first start it, then it might smooth out after a bit, and then when up to full temp you'll have whatever amount of clatter is normal for your engine. I've heard some that sound like you tossed a handfull of hammer heads into the crankcase. It's normal.

I noticed that also when I checked one out. The sound I heard was similar to “cylinder ring” which sounded like piston slap causing a harmonic sound, which is probably normal for that machine. Noticed in the 2320 brochure talk of tightened clearances and control of piston expansion....maybe someone else heard it too. Plenty of diesels have differing levels of noise, they appear to be getting more refined all the time, so IMO depends on what one is willing to listen to or get used to, probably don't notice it after a period of time. I’m sure if it’s compared to the older 2 cylinder Yanmars it will sound quiet.
