new engine or new tractor?

I have a 1987 12.5 h.p lawn tractor. The tecumseh is in need of replacement. The tractor is in great shape. I can get a brigs 17.5 h.p. brand new with a two year warranty for a little under $500.00. I don't really have the money for a new one tractor. I only use it to mow about 3/4 of an acre. I also use it to tow a little garden trailer around. I could probably scrape enough money up for a $1k to $1300 tractor. Is the rest of my tractor built well enough to go with a new engine. Or is the engine just a sign of things to come.

look up craigs list or kijiji and search for used engines ... look for snow blowers if you need a horizontal engine ....

I would consider getting a used tractor and take my time fixing the other one.Ive had good luck with used lawn tractors.I paid 500.00 for a ligthly used 1998 craftman LT .
