Just thought I'd tell you all about my new adventure. About 4 years ago I let a man talk me into laying blacktop down for my drive. I had planned to use concrete but this seemed so much easier. Anyway shortly after he had finished my drive had holes forming and it got worse as time went on. After many calls to this guy & the lawyer, we have decided to tear it out and do it right. The drive is 600' long with a 32' x 35' parking area, we have also decided to include the "barn lot" this time around. I have talked to many people about tearing out the blacktop. Now you may ask how does this pertain to tractors? Well after having a severe case of sticker shock from the loader guys I thought why not try the Kioti.... My litle CK20hst is doing a great job (I told the wife we needed the loader). This little tractor is amazing. It's peeling up sheets of this junk like nothing. I removed around 5 tons in about 2.5 hours last night. I'll post some pics over the weekend.

Don't waste that old asphalt. Put it somewhere it can be broken up, spread and repacked.:D

The CK weighs in around 3000lbs FEL & BB through in another 230 for the operator. And yes it's a great machine so far. It does whatever I ask of it.
The bigger peices are being put in a low spot next to the drive then will be covered. The smallers ones will be used on the drive. This is actually fun work. The wife thinks I'm crazy.

I wouldn't have tore all that base up. i'd have cold patched the bad areas.. or limed and tar'd them.. or at least concreted them.. and then I'd have put my new surface course right over top of it. Less work, and should last longer for less money.. etc.

Ended up only removing around 150' of the drive. It had buckled up so bad from being thick on the edges around 6" to only around a half towards the middle. We were worried that there was some pumping going on in the this section. The ground underneath is packed great and now we have no worries about the concrete staying put. All of the parking pad has been removed because we wanted the concrete about 1" lower than the floor of the garage. I had planned on putting some pics up but ran out of time the last few days. If I weren't at work (paying job) I'd be working at home right now..... All that is left is preping around the barn. That section only had gravel. I'll get pictures up tomorrow night.

I have a driveway of similar (600') length, and am considering whether to asphalt or concrete. Concrete is about $80/yd here, so I imagine would cost $25K for concrete based on 12' width (13k concrete and 12K for labor). But I haven't obtained any bids from contractors. I am curious what the concrete driveway will cost you, if you care to share?

You've heard of garbage in, garbage out, well that goes with asphalt also.

If you have a bad base you will continue to have problems. If you are not 100% sure about the base, you will only add to the problem.
Tear it all up redo the base compact the base and do it right.

I had bids from 35K to 22K just concrete and labor. Since the building industry is at a low in my area I was able to "talk" a couple of these guys down a tad. The final cost will be around 21K with steel, crete, labor, any gravel that is needed. Concrete is running me 81 a yard with fiber, that's a 6 bag mix and some say 4000 some say 5000 pound mix..... Used to be a 6 bag mix was 5000, so who knows.
The base wasn't the problem. I had 8 yard loads of concrete in the trucks drive up my gravel road without a dent. The this blacktop was put down and it crumbled. I found out why when I tore it out. Some pieces were 6" some were only .5". Guess where it crumbled?
