It is my understanding that starting in a couple of months, Diesel fuel is going to be substantially changed. The refineries, under rulings by the EPA. are going to start supplying USLD (Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel) which contains no more than 15 PPM Sulphur, as opposed to the current fuel which has around 550 PPM. The "impurities" in Diesel are used by current engines as a lubricant, and aid to soot removal. The EPA says that older engines will be able to use the new diesel fuel with no problems. Thats fine....but now we are being asked to Trust The Government, again.

Does anyone have any good info on this new fuel, and any sources for non-government data that refers to the new diesel, and any testing or recommendations regarding using it in older engines. Also, if soot removal might be affected, is there a new grade of engine oil available that can compensate for the changes in the fuel?

I have a super 2002 B2910HSD that I would sure hate to see have problems because of some change in fuel. If I need to change oil, etc., no problem...I just want to be prepared, so I don't have troubles.

You might want to ask this question in th Oils, Fuels, and Lubricants forum. Heck, they might already be talking about it and answered your questions.

Mad posted good sources of info. I will add one thing I have picked up and that is the only problem might be with leaks on some rubber parts, but mainly on older machines. Back in the early 90's (maybe 1993) when diesel fuel went from around 2500 ppm sulphur to the 500 ppm sulphur (lsd) that was the majority of problems. Two pluses with this new change: 1. The reduction isn't near as drastic and 2. Manufactures addressed those leakage problems with newer materials and your machine is new enough it should be a problem.

New diesel fuel is always better than old diesel fuel....:D

Since the new fuel is the only kind I will be able to buy, my plan is to use it.

My only other choice is to let the tractor sit.

Ditto here. Except for one addition: I will be glad to use the new fuel, since the refineries will be adding lubricants that won't hurt the environment or my children and grandchildren the way high sulfur would. Bring it on, I say.

monkey, Get rid of the BX and consider switching to a manual, push type, reel mower and a wheelbarrow and shovel. Your children, grandchildren and the environment would benefit greatly.:D

Question: Will the new fuel smell different (less)?
I have not noticed the odor being any different, but the color is. The stuff we are making is lime green. Word is some refineries have had it come out sort of hot pink. It's all from the new catalyst required to get the rest of the sulphur out!;)

That's a good idea! First, though, I'll have to sell this 5 acre property and buy something capable of being maintained by a gas free implement. When I sell it, I might as well offer to sell the BX with it, to recoup my invensment, and the buyer will need something anyway. Oh wait, that doesn't solve the problem at all. I think I'll just keep the property and put up with the polution I am adding to the ecosphere.

You could just make your own carbon sink.
Anyone know how much corn stalks I would have to bury to make up for the output of a gallon of diesel?
