I bought a stihl pro 026 about 2 years ago and it amazed me with it's power and I have yet to pull more than 4 times to start it no matter what time of year or how long it’s been since I’ve used it. I had a homelite before b/c that’s all I could find after hurricane Fran. The only problem is that the dealer that I bought it from stopped selling them (which I found out today) so when I went looking for a new chain it was an adventure, I ended up with a file and the name of the nearest dealer. So if your like trescrows and drive past a husky dealer, and if they make chainsaws like there bikes you’ll be splitting hairs to find the difference between the two. I’ll be a stihl man for as long my 026 lasts (even though I have to drive a little farther) and probably longer.

Am trying to decide between a Tanaka 4501 and a Shindawia
488. Both are 18 inch saws with two year warrenties. They are not cheap $399 for the Tanaka and $359 for the Shindawia. However I hope to get reliability and piece of mind.
Bought a Sears(Poulan) three years and after some light to moderate use it has major problems. Had two Homelites before and it was no guarentee they would start or stay running when you need them. My fater in law has had a lot of trouble with his Jonsereds (which are manufactured by Huskvarna). I'm curious if anyone has experience with either Tanaka or Shindawia and would like to pass it along. I m willing to pay more for a saw that will start and stay running when ever I need it. I suppose the other saws I mentioned are cheap for a reason.

You perhaps have been told or read that it is believed by some that humans and all living things, for lack of a better word, exude an aura about them. You see, I am able to perceive this aura on occasion and for each living being it is different and unique and in some cases I suspect there is something metaphysical that precludes the reliable operation of internal combustion devices in their presence. Could by chance you and your father in law fall into that catagory?--just kidding--sorta.
There may be more to my 3 crows than one might think (insert twilight zone music here).

Bob, jealousy does not suit you at all.
Ajax, I have no experience with the units you asked about, I saw one once but that is it, I would refer you to the Garden Web but it is populated by box store gurus but you might try asking there, rare that no one here has some knowledge however.
Really, despite statement to the contrary including mine, solid state ignition cured about 90 percent of -- "my small engine whatever will not run" --- type things. Still of course carburation is the other bugaboo.
I wonder if you are using fresh fuel, proper oil mix, correct plug, they are all pretty simple machines and should run all else being equal. A string of bad luck with multiple top end brands generally indicates an operator error, not intending to be smart but there could be something else in play here with your bad luck and having nothing to do with your aura /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif . I would highly recommend the Shindaiwa 488. Tanaka seems to be well made, but they are rare around here, so getting
parts is a nightmare. Stihl 026 is a good choice, but @$410.

Teherzog,

Glad to hear you've had a good experience with the STIHL O26. I'm looking quite seriously at that one. How big of a bar will it handle?

My other STIHL choice is the FARM BOSS for about a hundred less. It's much bigger, but I'm inclined to go with the smaller unit. Have you had much problem with "Kick-back?"
