Rotary Cutter New Bush Hog Chain guard necessary???

I too recommend chain guards or the like.
You just never know what you'll really be cutting, especially if you infrequently.
There is one 2 acre meadow I mow only once each year. Every time I manage to throw rocks or log shrapnel when I cut that meadow. I made a set for my Howse using old chain. It was pretty easy to fab a mount and cut the chains to length. I would've bought a set of chains from Howse, but the shipping was equal to the chain cost. So for me it was a no brainer to make them myself.
Here is the thread with lots of photos: Add Chain Guards to Rotary Cutter
There were a lot of good ideas thrown in from the TBN guys.

Nice job on the guard Rob. Did you size every one of those links to fit over the bar and weld those small ends to the bar??? Nice job if that's what you did. But.....lotsa work...no? I took the easy route.....and just laid the whole chain link on the side and welded the loops. I simply held them in place with with spring clamps. I'm not as good of a welder as you are.

I may add a rear chain guard next winter if time permits. I didn't originally think it to be a problem....but, it seems as though someone (usually my wife or a friend) is always approaching me as I work......and I worry I am going to throw junk at them.

I am fixing to make a set of chain guards for the used Bush Hog I just got. I have had wood thrown into the tire and punch a hole in it at our hunting club. I will always have a guard on any thing I use from now on.

Is the hay roller belts tough enough for a guard on the back. I put chains on the front but they would be a bit tougher to fabricate on the rear.

Yes.. bailer belting should work.. so will conveyor belting.. or truck mudflaps. I made the front guards on my hog out of cheap 4$ truck mudflaps, andle iron.. drilled holes and cheap bolts..

works great..
