After much agonizing, deciding, and re-deciding, I pulled the trigger on the purchase of a new (well, 2009) New Holland Boomer 8N from Tim at New Albany Tractor Sales in Indiana. I bought it with a QA FEL and Hawkline 6 foot slip clutch shredder, Rimguard R-4 tires, and a red front grill guard. Tim threw in a block heater. The tractor has about 12 hours on it.
Even with delivery from Indiana to New York, the cost of this 50 hp tractor was less than a dickered price on a similarly-equipped Kubota L3940 with 40.5 hp. It is far less than a similarly-equipped John Deere 4120.
Without getting into brand comparisons, with the deals you can get now on the New Holland 8N, it is a heck of a value. I know they were way over-priced when they came out, but now it's a different story. I found dealing with Tim a pleasurable experience, and I think he gave me a fair (a very good) deal. I checked a reference he provided of a fellow who had bought an 8N from them, and the reference gave Tim glowing comments.
I don't like the chrome ROPS. It makes me cringe every time I see it. I know the real farmers will mock me for it. I think I'll have a smug smile every time I see that chrome ROPS, though, because I think that kept some farmers from buying the units (along with the too, too high price), and that is why I was able to get one at a great price.
I get delivery the last of March, and I will post photos.
