New boom cylinder fixed the droopsies..

This backhoe boom "relaxed" lower fast since it was new, with the engine running. The dealer said it was either a rolled O-ring in the boom cylinder or in the backhoe manifold, so he sent me a new cylinder under warranty. It worked.

After removing the pins holding the cylinder it slid right out, then compressing the cylinder with a bar clamp while the hoses are attached saves a mess later, and a quart of hyd oil. The hoses dripped a few drops when disconnected, less than a spoonful.

The fix should give even a little more digging and lifting power, since hyd oil won't be passing the O-ring now, though it was pretty danged good for a CUT already.

I'm relieved it was just the cylinder and pretty straight forward :~)

Thanks for the post, always find fixes good subjects. Nice thing about hydraulics, relatively straight forward. Oil under pressure, valves and pistons. I've plumbed up my own in the past and nice when it comes together. The other nice part about hydraulics, typically it can be repaired. Not like electrical shorts and the like that you can chase for ever. Good job, should have plenty of good diggin going forward. One thing to think about, may be worth tearing down the old piston to see if the O-ring is in tact. Would want to be aware if there is a piece of ring floating around. Could conceivably get into the valve body? Would think if it was in pieces you'd probably have oil on the outside though.

Just because you didn't get lots of responses... doesn't mean we aren't interested in your findings. If you have findings... report them, we all benefit. Is the BH performing any better with the new cylinder? I too would be interested what you found if you pulled the cylinder appart, or does the dealer/Kioti want it back?

Thanks for posting this. It looks like a job most any tractor owner could perform on his own. So, looks like you just allowed the boom to relax and put remote in Neutral and shut down. Then commenced the job. Let me ask a very basic question. How hard is it to drive those pins from the clevis ends of those cylinders and did they bind up at all requiring moving the cylinder shaft a touch back and forth to take pressure off the pin?

Whew, I was thinking that I'd installed the cylinder on the wrong tire or something...

Good idea - there wasn't any leaking oil, but when i find a schematic or feel brave then might disassemble that old-but-still-good cylinder to see if a O-ring broke apart. The dealer said that the six droopsy cylinders he has replaced didn't have broken Orings but had "rolled" and allowed fluid to seep past. The cylinder still works, just "droops", so it's my backup. He said to keep it (I like that guy :~)

I haven't tried any hard digging with the new cylinder yet, will post when I do if it does even better.

The job was easier than my imagination had feared, there were no hidden tricks or special tools. I used a bronze driftpin to knock out the end pins and good thing I started tapping just gently, or it would have shot out into the side of the truck. The pins slid right out no binding at all, could have pushed them with a thumb. Then to close the cylinder (with the hoses still attached) and compress the fluid out with the bar clamp, I bungee-corded the control stick back so the fluid would flow back to the reservoir.

I always looked at beer like women. Whatever is around and doesn't leave a bad taste in my mouth.

I've never had Kioti cylinder apart. Sounds like they had some issues. This would be a good cylinder for you to learn on. Get a seal kit, tear it down, and go to town. Need any help, just ask.

Oh, by the way. All 44,332 of us got together and let your post hang out there for a while, see how you took it. You did good.

Ok I got fired up to rebuild the cylinder, cuz you're right it'd be a good learner and how hard could it be? So called the nearest Kioti dealer (not where i bought it) to buy the seal kit. He said "Unfortunately kioti doesn't offer a complete seal kit so all the rubber and seals would have to be ordered separately." And wants $52 +shpg. That's for like 9 Orings and seals on the BH14-0100 cylinder, right? He may be high but I'm not.

But if i find a decent price, I appreciate tapping your experience on a rebuild. The beer's on me.

Depending on the seal configuration, that may not be a bad price. I buy most of my seals and kits aftermarket and some of those seal kits cost me over $100. It's to the point that I don't give quotes on cylinders until I disassemble and price seals. I did a couple cylinders for next to nothing. Not only the cost of a kit, but once in a while they won't come apart. You can't muscle them apart or something gets broken.

Why don't you give Rick a call at Wallace Tractor. At least you will know if the other guy is treating you fair.
