New basic EV truck

Is it really a truck if it has a 5 ft bed ? :p

The price point is interesting.

The car companies are in deep doo doo with their VERY high prices, high interest rates, and low reliability. They shafted their customers in the lock down and continued to do so after the pandemic ended. The so called auto company leaders think/though people could afford $800-1000+ car payments.... One auto "leader" has already been forced out and I think more will follow. The CEO at Harley Davidson got force out for the same mind set.

@jyoutz Yes, I saw that too this morning and had a quick browse on the website, SLATE. It seems like an interesting concept, taking a page from GM's Saturn line for composite body panels, and claimed support for a slew of DIY features and enhancements.

Personally, I wouldn't mind an EV that isn't selling my every move and detail to the world, and not having hundreds of electronic features ought to keep the repair costs down, unlike many of the other EVs that can be write offs for what appears to be relatively minor accidents. We have two different PHEV for which a door ding is a "replace the door" repair because the door is made of a lightweight metal that permanently deforms.

Still, the proof is in the pudding as they say, and they haven't delivered a vehicle yet. To be continued...

All the best,

Peter

An article that I read yesterday but cannot find today was about expensive add-ons and subscription fees on new cars. No wonder that I run my trucks until they are DOE.

Seems like the base Ford maverick lists around $25. Asked the dealer about one and was told they never seem to get an allotment in that price range, only the higher priced versions.

Big surprise there.

Gotta say though, from what I've seen that Slate truck seems to be a little TOO strippo...I mean, not even a radio? I don't care about blue tooth, GPS, or any sort of cellphone integration, but I do like my tunes when I'm driving!
Range seems to be on the short side too.

Agree on the principle of the thing, but I wonder if there's enough of a market in the U.S. for something as spartan as that.

Current generation doesn't do radios-only phones.

I've seen other low price truck touted, but yet to see one come to real life.

Even worse, did you notice the 1,000 lb towing limit?
If I'm gonna own a truck I need it to be able to tow my tractor.
The people who this appeal to aren't likely to own tractors.

That’s been happening forever. White colored, base models advertised, but only mid, to upper levels supplied.
I noticed this one said only road camouflage gray available. Gray is cheap like white.
I’ve seen reds, and blues adding $800 to the sticker.

I haven't looked at the specs, but if the truck has a couple speakers and bluetooth, that's probably sufficient for most of the current generation's music needs.

Mind you, this isn't a "most of the current generation" vehicle though.

The appeal for me is cost avoidance. Replacing my F150 today is $60k. Gas at 20 MPG.

If I put 15k miles a year on another car for going to town, church, visiting friends, etc I will not need to replace the F150 for another 15 years. So is it smarter to replace the F150 for $75k in 2030, or pay $25k for a puddle jumper plus another. $800/yr for insurance?

At 74, the $25k puddle jumper may be the last vehicle I buy. Or is it better to buy a $75k vehicle in 5 years?

That’s a common dilemma.
I think, all considered, the latter is the better decision.

I call BS based on all the other builders who have promised an EV truck at low price and come out with one twice the cost. Remember the $40k ford lightening? Or the $50k cybertruck? Part of that is just to create a buzz.
Canoo was also gonna do it and had a limited amount of trucks actually hit the street and then went bankrupt. I know because I bought stock which is now worth 18 cents/share.
Bringing these tk market is no small feat. Even with a towing capacity of only 1,000 lbs it would still sell a lot if they can pull it off.
I jope to be proven wrong but I don’t believe it.
