Hello Again! Well, I pulled the trigger on the 5103 this past week and took delivery Saturday. Here's the package:

2007 JD 5103 50hp tractor
Roof canopy
arm rests (on backorder)
Downward exhaust
Rhino TW72 mower
Brown Disc harrow

Could not get the 512 FEL on the package as the dealer was out of stock and unable to get one transferred in from another dealer. I will add this as soon as he gets it in.

General review: Great utility tractor. Plenty of power, basic layout and simple design. Comfy seat. Rode for about 3 hours and used a 1/4 tank of fuel. My left quad is a little sore from mashing the clutch. Not that it was stiff, just used some muscles I wasn't used to using. The dealer was supposed to put water in the tires but didn't. When I used the disc to harrow about 4 acres of food plots, the front end got a little light. I'm sure the FEL will help to balance that out but I sure wish I had weights on the front.

I mowed all of the roads on the 160 acres we have and it took no time to get finished. About three weeks prior, my father and I had mowed everything with his two riding mowers. It took us 4 hours each (8 man hours) to mow the roads. It took me less than two hours on the tractor!!

After reading all the replies to my 2wd vs 4wd thread, I generally determined that a tractor is just a tractor. It is not an ATV and is not a TANK to go anywhere and everywhere. I just could not pass up the 0% financing deal on the 2wd tractor and spend the extra $$ for the 4wd so I will use the new tractor for its intended purpose, mowing and plowing. It was pretty wet and muddy from a heavy rain on Friday night and plowing conditions were not ideal. I did lose traction a couple of times, but I'm not sure 4wd would have helped much. Anyway, I really enjoyed my tractor and hated to leave, but I was finished working.

For those of you looking for a good utility tractor, this one is off to a good start for me.

Beautiful tractor, and I agree with your anaylsis, love my '07 5103. But, I am soooo envious of the canopy! That is on my "get before next summer" list.

You will get a lot of pleasure out of your 03. I cleaned mine up Saturday--wash/wax/black the tires/spot paint where needed. Its cleaner than my pickup.

The filled tires will help you out a lot.

The only problem I have had with my 5203 is that the linkage on the 3hp lever mechanism froze up. I posted this twice on TBN, but have only gotten one response. I had it replaced and the shop foreman had the new linkage tapped, drilled, and fitted with grease zerks. He said he had several come in with the same problem. Must be a West Texas thing.

You will get along just fine without the 4WD. I wish sometimes I had the 4WD, but that said, you will be suprised what the tractor will do for you--especially once you get the tires filled. And you are right--your tractor is not an ATV or a tank.

Also, get a tooth bar or a landscape bar from H&H for your loader when you get it. It makes a world of difference.

Congratulations on your 03 and have fun.

I named my Gus after Duvall's character on Lonesome Dove.

TaylorK, that canopy was probably the best thing I did after deciding to buy the tractor. I used the tractor from 11:00 to 3:00 and never felt the sun on my face or on my neck. It was an aftermarket brand and only cost $275. Needless to say, I was grining from ear to ear!! :D

You will enjoy that set-up. I like the Rhino cutter, looks good in green.

Spoke to the dealer, the canopy is a Bucktop brand. If you have other questions, I suggest calling Clint at Greensouth Equipment at 229-226-4881.

Nice setup! I would definitely recommend the filled rear tires and the front weights. I have a JD 5303 and a Rhino TW84. I put 4 weights on the front to help keep the front end down. Those Rhino 3pt mowers are nice and heavy.

Enjoy your new tractor!

Very good. Thanks for the information on the canopy and enjoy your 5103. I absolutely love mine, although I haven't had many hours of "seat time" since I got it - thanks primarily due to the wet East Texas weather of this year-- but I am not complaining, I remember dry as opposed to full tanks. But, as I could, and particularly the last week, I have been working to overcome my deficit in the "seat time" department.

A funny: kidded my dealer about getting a rebate since I had only put on about 7 hours prior to my first payment coming due (due to the wet). He said that was nothing, another customer was supposed to get a bailer delivered -the paperwork was signed etc, but it couldn't get delivered due to the weather that ensued that weekend, and worse, thanks to the heavy rain during our early summer- the thing was still on the *dealer's* lot (again, the paperwork had been done a month before) and he had to make his first payment and hadn't even gotten to have it delivered thanks to boggy field conditions at this place!
