They were (are) great tractors, but along with a premium tractor came a premium
price, and JD had to change to stay competitive.

Mid pto is available on the current 4000tweney series. I've seen them with belly mowers on them. All my brochures have a mid pto option offered. Besides, you need a mid pto to run a front mounted snow blower or broom. Unless they discontinued on later models. Looking at the 485A backhoe frame mounts, I doubt it would compatible with a mid mount mower. But until they show up on dealer lots, we'll all just guessing.

I received info from a member on this thread that apparently the mid pto is not offered on the late current 4000 series. I was hoping they would make an auto connect drive over deck for the 4 series but a guy at my local dealership told me a while back that most people are not putting mid mount mowers on the 4000 series. I may have to look at a rear grooming mower. I just have no experience with them and am hesitant on how they would perform on mulching leaves in the fall season.

The new tractor looks like a step backwards compared to the 4000 Twenty series.

here are the notes from the JD sales information regarding mid pto compatibility:

*4000 TWENTY Tractors with serial numbers ending with 916000 (open operator station [OOS]) and above are not compatible with mid-mount mowers (for grooming).
4000 TWENTY Tractors with serial numbers ending with 946000 (cab) and above are not compatible with mid-mount mowers (for grooming).

Great info Dutch. Thanks for that.

That was how I felt after seeing them in person.
It's a shame. The 3000 and 4000 Twenties were really, really nice tractors. Especially the 4000 Twenties. I came "this close" to buying one after testing it out. Very impressive machine all the way around. The only things I didn't like about it were the plastic fenders and price. Other than those two items, it was a winner.

It's sad that they took a step backwards.

Don't assume they are a step backwards. There were alot of pictures of new features. Perhaps you would have purchased a 4M - they are perfect for customers that feel they can't justify a premium tractor but still want a really nice tractor. They are very nice with alot of thought and research going into them.

I hope Tractor Slinger illustrates what the changes are. You will be very happy.

I won't be buying one in any case, because I already bought a Massey Ferguson.
