The severed flesh, if you can find it, is usually the best closure. With a clean cut you can just slap it back on after a good rinse. I once followed up with an emergency doc visit. Doc pulled it off, rinsed both sides in normal saline, and put it back with a bandaid over it. Healed well.

I’ve cut myself too many times to remember over 60+ years, once down to the bone on my thumb, but usually it was sharp knives so the cutting didn’t hurt as bad as the healing. I like to cook and do it a lot so my knife skills keep getting better and I am pretty fast prepping stuff and rarely even a nick these days. The two most painful experiences were bad sinusitis migraines that could be so bad you couldn’t move your head without it exploding in pain. These are mostly a thing of the past as I can tell when they are coming on and take measures to avoid them getting full blown. The winner though was a bout of pancreatitis that landed me in the emergency room and eventually in the ICU on a morphine drip. That was unrelenting, twisting knife in the gut painful. The cause was never clear, though they suspected some sludge blocked a bile duct.

BOY - that sounds like a world of FUN. I've never cut anything completely off. Not even the smallest hunk of hide. But, BROTHER, do I ever have the scars from deep cuts. The worst being - chainsaw to the heal of my thumb.

I can tell you - it hurt like nothing I had previously experienced. Got my pants down fast enough so that I didn't crap myself. But it was close.

I thought it would quit bleeding pretty soon - not the case. So I squeezed it close and held it that way with small bandages. This was a whole lot of fun because blood was running everywhere. Wrapped it in the cleanest shop towel available and high tailed it home on the tractor.

At home - cleaned it up more - more small bandages. Then I got out the little bottle of Liquid Bandage. That stung like mad but pretty soon it stopped the bleeding.

Regained what composure I had remaining - got in my vehicle and drove to the local Medical Center. Of course - first was a great big Tetanus shot.

They stitched it shut and now I have a very fine scar from the heal, half way up the thumb.

Strange how you remember the pretty nurse. I remember the fellow who worked on my thumb. He could have been a pro wrestler.
Cuts can certainly be painful, but a kidney stone will bring maximum pain!

Two K. stones was my final signal to start drinking lots of water. Man they hurt.
