Does Netscape seem glitchy to you? It seems I have more problems with Netscape locking up or crashing especially on TBN. Yet, when I use Explorer I don't have these same problems. The trouble is I'm use to using Netscape and reluctant to change. I've tried different versions too but that don't help.

Tawoo: I use both, sometimes simultaneously, Explorer works well for me at TBN. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Netscape is problematic , /w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif but I need to use it on other forums where explorer won't work. .....RayBee /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Yes, Netscape has difficulty with some of the latest enhancements to the TBN pages, but the problem is Netscape, not TBN. Same is true for CBN.

Having said that, Netscape is still my browser of preference, but that's probably due mostly to my personal feelings about Micro$oft in general. While Netscape is only is only a partial implementation of what is required for the current HTML standards, Explorer in many cases goes beyond the standards, or parallels the standards with Micro$oft's own "proprietary" way of doing things.

As you can imagine, this is a pain for web developers. To create anything but the most basic web pages that will work properly on both browsers is quite the challenge these days. I have only recently given in and now cater to Explorer for my own web creations -- not 'cuz I like it, but because that's what the majority of web surfers will use to view my stuff.

In addition to Netscape and Explorer, there are dozens of other browsers out there, too, each with their own quirks, but statistically they don't amount to enough for most developers to worry about.

Standards are a wonderful thing, but it's the old story of leading a horse to water ...

Harv,
Thanks for the reply. I was not sure if the problem was me or my computer. It sounds like it is not. I'll do what other folks do-use both.

Netscape always causes problems for me - hangs alot as you describe. Is a royal pain to alway have it "starting java".

I usually use IE, as it seems to move much faster, much less problems.

I use Netscape's email though; I avoid Outlook due to its susceptability to viruses, etc. Have never been hit with a virus with Netscape's email (I get the emails that have them, but nothing happens - just delete them).

I have used netscape for years and liked it alot. i think from the fisrt version up until version 4.7 then it got glitchy to me also. so when I got my new computer I have been using explorer #6 and have found that this is just as good, just need to get used to it. I have tried to keep all software on computer microsoft (not that I like bill gates or anything) but I figure if I do this I will have less problems with conficts between software and hardware. so far so good.

I started with Netscape years ago, but haven't had it loaded for a long, long time. I've used Opera for several years now and really like it. It is far faster than either IE or Netscape, and unlike IE, the back button is usually instantaneous.

For the few sites that it won't open, I use IE. Lately, I've had to use IE less and less, which is a GOOD thing.

Opera is available in free and paid versions. The only difference is a small inoffensive ad area in the free version.

It's worth taking a look.

Tawoo, Netscape used to crash on my machine almost every time I went to TBN. Finally upgraded to Netscape 7, and it has not crashed yet. Netscape 7 takes some getting used to, but has been very stable since I upgraded about a month ago. It also has a lot more features, many of which I have not tried yet.

I prefer Netscape and use their webmail. The google search is real good in my opinion. Running 7.0. Sometimes have to use Internet Exploder but it's rare. When I get a lockup it is from the dialup connection (funky phone lines) reconnect and its OK. Maybe I'm missing something but it seems to run fine on TBN.

I use opera and have no problems here.
IE is a joke and netscape lost its edge a while back.

Tawoo,

When I first started out, I was using Netscape. After a couple of years, (job change) the standard was IE. I didn't care too much for IE after using Netscape due to several factors. One, as others mentioned was the monopoly of Microsoft. Also, something new to learn to do the same task. Now, the major pharmaceutical compnay I am at uses Netscape 4.8. I was having some issues with TBN on ver 4.72, but 4.8 seems to have addressed them. Still, there are times during the day where Netscape has a hissy-fit and exits.

I spent 30 years in the computer industry and I have designed and tested a bunch of software. I have always preferred Netscape, but once AOL bought them they went down the tubes. Netscape is now a slow and buggy shell of it's former self. The latest version is just more of the same. The news reader is a slug.... much slower than V6.

Sad to say, I am about to force myself to use IE. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

I'm pretty much in agreement with what can be read at this <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.anybrowser.org/campaign/>link</A>.

Did anyone hear about the verdict for the Sun Java vs. MS Virtual Machine case? Basically, don't waste your time on MS's site looking for VM. Sun's Java will be included in subsequent releases of windoze.

I second the vote for Opera. It's all I use these days. You can have it lie and say it's Exploder or Netscape for those old-fashioned sites that require this. The only site I have any problem with Opera these days is this one, oddly enough. And it's a minor problem. You hit "Continue" to post a message, and it comes back with a message about all fields not being filled in. Then you just use the "back" button, and try again. It rarely takes more than two tries to get it to take. Dunno why it does this, but the benefits of Opera outweigh this small inconvenience, in my mind. The new M2 mail and news client built in seems pretty cool, too.. although this is a beta and not completely debugged yet.

This baby is fast! They've really done some serious work on the core of it, and it shows.

That's a good site, Paul. Thanks for pointing it out.

I have trouble with Netscape all the time and almost never have trouble with IE, so I use IE. The only time I use Netscape is when I'm testing something at work.

For my first experience on the Internet, my ISP recommended, and provided, Netscape, so it was what I learned on. I looked at IE and didn't like it because I was accustomed to Netscape, but then after a couple of "upgrades" to later versions of Netscape, I started having so much trouble with it that I dumped it and have used nothing but IE now for quite some time.

Bird, you sound like my mother. She was in her eighties when she first encountered a computer of any kind. I made the mistake of having her learn Outlook Express, and now, despite my best efforts, she won't abandon it and learn something new! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif
