There is something strange going on today with Netscape 4.75 and TBN. (Note: these errors are not arising with IE 5.0). Have tried two separate machines, flushed the cache:
On the Discussion page, no grids (gray bars) appear.
On the banner, if I click on:
> “Home” it takes me to “Check Private”.
> “Discussions”, it takes me to “Who’s Online”!.
Haven’t checked all the paths… don’t get too far before Netscape crashes. Guess I’ll have to switch to IE for a while.

Yes, this is happening to me too! Netscape is my default browser. I greatly prefer it to IE (which seems to run generally slow in my experience).

Please help!

Okay fellas,

Not to get anytbody's nose out of joint but...

Netscape 4.5 is an OLD browser version. It is a known fact that Netscape, even in its current version (6.01) does not comply with various web standards.

At the least, you need to visit Netscape and get the latest version of the browser. www.netscape.com, click on downloads.

Well, IMHO…. Netscape 6 is a known dog, I have it, but don’t use it. They based V6 (I believe) off Mozella, which has always been iffy. Netscape 4.7, though, has been stable (and it’s not that old). Where I have seen it usually fail is with ASP. Not long ago, Netscape/UNIX (I believe) dominated the server world. Now, (I believe) ASP on NT/Win2000 does. Wait a minute…. Isn’t IE, ASP, NT/Win2000 all from the same provider /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif? I’ll use IE in a pinch, but prefer, as an old UNIX guy, Netscape. But then again, with AOL/Time Warner swallowing Netscape, I can’t root for the little guy any more.

For grins, I kicked-off Netscape 6. Got Netscape 6, 4.7 and IE 5 running concurrently. Only one failing is Netscape 4.7. I really do not want a choice of Mozella or IE?. I have to make choices like that one in most elections, What is the lesser of two evils? /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif. Guess we all have to move on sometime /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Take it back... While previewing this, I keep going back... Netscape 6 keeps putting '?' in for other characters.

Hi Roy,

Like you, I have a lot of "good old days" preferences. But it is getting harder and harder to use them. I frankly do not know the specifics on Netscape, since I rarely use it. I do know that I have heard various designers complain that even the latest version simply is not compliant with certain key HTML standards. Why this is, I do not know.

The TBN server is a Unix platfrom, I am pretty sure. Even with the advancing market share of MS and ISS, Unix still is used on around 80% of the server market.

yea,
The good old days of awk and sed!
Why can't we just ls -c | pr -4t >filename and then vi the file?

Sounds very strange. I was going to do some basic checks of the site in netscape, but to give you an idea, netscape wouldn't even open on my machine... that program never fails to amaze me.

Considering that the only change made prior to your post was the removal of one line of code (testing some things with the speed issue), I really have no idea why it would behave the way you guys describe... but assuming I can get netscape to even load tomorrow, I'll try to figure it out. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Sorry for any inconvenience,

Would update my Netscape if I could. Corporate standards do not allow the upgrade (corporate computers). Believe they are moving to 6.x but in the mean time...guess I'll have to sit and whine!!! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I must be in the Fordson Tractor Age because I use Netscape 3.0 (IE 4 for TBN) for a most uses! Have a newer one, 4.5? Don't even want to spend the time moving bookmarks, mail etc, looks like a big ugly complicated clod of a program, almost as bad as IE.

Does anybody find it weird that a program that a kazillion million people use (web browser) is only available from such a limited number of companies and given away for free?

I'd gladly PAY for a browser that could spot those disgusting BLINKING crap banners etc and replace them with a nice white spot.

Muhammad -

As you know from some of our private discussions, I have no particular love for Netscrap myself, but although it constantly frustrates me as a web developer, it's still pretty unusual for it to up and crash. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

On a positive note, I am thrilled with the rendering performance on your new borderless, plain background format. I would estimate a speed improvement of 2 to 3 times on the longer pages. That's great! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I did, however, crash 3 times tonight (Netscrap 4.7/Mac) while reading the Past 24 Hours messages. What's most peculiar to me is the fact that the last crash was over an hour ago. Talk about intermittent! /w3tcompact/icons/mad.gif

It's just possible the browser still has a bug of two in it. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

FWIW - I also have Netscrap 6, but I am so totally underwhelmed by it that I flat out don't use it. Seems like a giant step backwards in the evolution of browsers.

If I say any more, I might let my real feelings slip out. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Ok, it should all be fixed now. I just tested things and it works as it should, in netscape anyway.

After seeing how netscape performs, I would strongly urge anyone who uses netscape to switch to Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher. It is just a much better browser. Almost all sites will display better and run smoother in IE than in netscape.

But for now, the forum should work properly in netscape (4.7+). It does for me.

Thanks for the fix Muhammad!!! For those of us who like to take a peek from work now and then..and who have to use Netscape there /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif...it's great to be able to view everything properly again.

<font color=blue>have to use Netscape there</font color=blue>

Well, I suppose if there is no other option, TBN on netscape is better than no TBN at all, right? /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif
