Any people here have neighbors that burn garbage? Any ideas on how to stop them? It is nasty and it is annoying, we have to keep the windows closed when they burn.

In my area everyone burns garbage, anything that will burn gets set into the burn barrel and gets lit about once a week.

I burn my garbage all the time. It's one of the things that makes in nice living out in the country. Burn what I can and take about a load a year to the dumps. I thought everyone did the same?

I'm thinking it's a good thing everybody don't.

You don't see anything wrong with burning garbage ?, Really ?

You don't see a problem with throwing it in a hole in the ground?

I'm glad i don't have neighbors....and have to smell their garbage.

I burn all my paper, and the county has a place 5 miles from my house where i can take my other garbage (in bags) and dump it for free.... and they have trucks that haul it to other counties.

I also burn a lot of brush piles.....but i like the smell of wood:D

If your neighbors are burning plastic, tires or any other bad toxic smoke.... then i would move...or call the "EPA"

Oh, Welcome to TBN!

Where do these threads come from.....I know this one won't last long.

we burn ours.... if it burns it goes in the burn barrel.

but i do keep in mind wind direction and contents. I burn in an "open" barrel i make out of small hole fence. I try to light with paper and cardboard/paperboards and when that stuff is going really well dump on the plastic stuff. burns hot and quick. I rarely have the smoldering plastic smell that is all to common with the neighbors who burn in enclosed-dont-get-enough-air 55gal drums.

When my paper waste exceeds my garbage capacity for the week like when my wife gets lots of packages from e-bay or when we catch up on cleaning out storage rooms I will take the pure paper and burn it on a rainy day.(had trouble with a fire once) When I drive through an area where someone burns all their garbage all I can say is I'm glad it don't live around there and smell it. It seems to smolder all day.

It's a funny thing about what happens to garbage. When I lived in California, we had pickup once a week. The city also gave us three colored containers for paper, cans and bottles. The guy loaded them into different compartments in their truck and went on to the next house to do the same thing.

Here's the funny part. I was a Union Steward with the Teamsters and knew allot of the gargbage guys. Same Local. I asked what they did with those different materials. They laughed at me and told that they dump it all in the same place. It's just a stunt to make people feel good, but it's way too expensive and time consuming to go through the stuff they find in those bins to do anything with them. So they just dump them all at the landfill.

Another funny thing about garbage was on National Geographic. There is a HUGE landfill in Southern California. It's been going on for decades. Their is a class from one of the Universities, maybe UCLA, that drills down into the landfill to see what it can find. They are studying what happens in the landfills. One of their big discoveries is that items that would normaly break down will last for decades way down deep. For an example, they pulled up newspapers with articles about Nixon when he was President. They could still read the print!!! Newspaper burried deep enough in the ground will remain in perfect condition for decades. They don't even have a clue how long it will last since it was assumed that it breaks down over time. Now we know it doesn't.

As for me and what I do, yes, I burn. What doesn't burn goes into my dumpster and then when that gets full, I haul it off to the landfill. I know exactly what happens to my garbage and I'm comfortable with what I'm doing. I bet most of those who rely on the city or county or whoever to haul off ther garbage doesn't have a clue what happens to it. I also doubt that most people realize that most reclycling is a big scam to make some people feel good and add more fees to the service without actually changing anything.

Here's a few pictures of my burn piles. I like to add a few trees to the pile to get it good and hot. When it gets hot enough, it will melt bottles and some metals.

Eddie

I've been told neighbors are gonna do what they want, and there is nothing your gonna do about it -- :(

Or maybe you could save all your smelliest garbage and wait until they have company...

I think in New Hampshire burn barrows have been outlawed so no burning garbage here. At our mountain camp we have someone that burns garbage all the time and it is a smell I could live without.

I absolutely hate smelling burning garbage or trash. Many places have outlawed it and thats a good thing.
If I don't smell it then have at it, problem is under the wrong conditions it can go for miles.

What I don't get is why people wait until a nice day when you want to be outside or have your windows open, to burn.

I,m guessing You dont like the smell of livestock or Deisel fumes as well. :D

We Save Bottles, tincans, plastic & paper all goes to a free recycle bin setup at one of the little country stores the . cats get the leftovers if there are any & the Rabbits get the greens . We dont waste much .

As Eddie does , I also have a burn barrel but not much left to go in it but shop scrap , Filter boxes & cardboard . the bigger stuff goes limbs & such in the burn pile which I burn weeklly so it doesn,t get out of hand .

I Used to use tires to start the burnpile during the ice storm damage 5 & 10 years ago . But I try not to do that anymore . We aint No greenies or Nothing it just seems to work out for us better.

The county out here still uses tires to burn there dump piles as well as couches & stuff the nice city folks like to donate to our country ditches  . Bob

We burn too. But nothing really nasty like tires or anything. Sometimes some plastic makes it into the pile but I always make sure there is a good load of brush and wood involved so even if a nasty item winds up in there (like the string from round bales) it's not noticeable. We also try very hard to do it when the wind is NOT blowing towards the neighbor's place which is about 460 feet away.

That said, if my neighbor asked me not to, I would stop for the sake of good relations.

Ironically I'm about to go burn a big pile of cardboard and wood scrap today!!

Yep, burning barrels are pretty common here, mostly paper products.
