Still 4310 and lovin' it!

Yup, a 790 is a nice machine, but savin' money does come at a price!

Personally, I'd probably just make more trips with the tractor you have now...make those pallets about 750-800 pounds. Even then, you're pushing that 790 and loader (I suspect you have the 70 loader if you have the 30 HP 790).

If you really need more power and hydraulic capacity, price a 3320. Nice machine...I wanted one with a power-reverser tranny. Not too bad a price...my payments would have gone up about $50 per month.

But I didn't want to go deeper in debt...so I'll stick with the 790.

If you don't mind the debt, try a 3320 with power-reverser.

As far as your 790's worth...my estimate would be $10000-$11000, depending upon your location.

I might get banned from TBN for making a non-tractor suggestion /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif, but how about a cheap real forklift? If you are unloading on concrete, you can pick up a 4000lb hard tire forklift for a song and nothing picks up pallets better than a forklift. If you need off road forklift capabilities, then my suggestion isn't so good.

We have seen 2000lb capacity loaders that struggle with 1500 lbs on a pallet, due to leverage issues. Then you get your old beater forklift and it lifts it without so much as a grunt. I suspect you can lift a lot with the back of a 790, so a set of forks on that end would move a heavy pallet around once it is off the truck.

The 790 is a great little tractor, but as with most lighter CUTs, they don't make the best forklift. Even heavier CUTs are more limited than most people think.

Thanks everyone for your input.

I have decided to upgrade the tractor...not improve my 790.

I had a quote from local Kubota and John Deere dealer as these are the only dealers in town.

John Deere: 3320, with Hydro transmission, R4 tires, 300CX loader with 1550MM Hvy dty bucket. Delivered price less sales tax is $20,175.00. The Power reverser will be about 800 less. (I am leaning towards the power reverser, but would let my wife decied).

Kubota: L3130DT-F (4 speed clutch), industrial tires with LA773 loader with 6ft bucket. ($18,311)

Kubota: L3130HST-F (hydrostatic trans), industrial tires with La773 loader with 6 ft bucket. ($20,611)

Kubota: L3130GST (12 speed glide shift trans), industrial tires with LA773 Loader with 6 foot bucket ($20,127)

Kubota dealer suggested that I sell my 790 on my own.
JD said that my tractor with 150 hrs would be $10,000 for trade in value (subject to his inspection).

This tractor will not be used for mowing, it is to plow my driveway (600 feet winding uphill thru woods), gardening, and field work consisting of 3 pt chipper, and hauling timber. As well my wife used it as a 4WD wheelbarrow. And of course as a fork lift.

What do you guys think of the "deals" my local dealers offered?

Its been 3 years since I looked at tractors so as far as pricing goes, I am not sure. I know that selling your tractor is typically the best way to go. I am in the same boat as you as far as selling my tractor. I have a few more tasks to do around here that are unthinkable to do by hand. I have a Kubota L3830 HST with TnT and a 84" mower that I hope will get about 15% less then new cost on the tractor. Here in CA we pay sales tax on new equipment but used has no sales tax so folks will be a ways ahead there. This could work in your favor as well. Be sure to consider a quick attach for your forks. I can tell you that even a L3830 with its much larger loader struggles with the forks out that extra 2 feet or so.

Seriously consider the hydro with either unit. I cannot believe the difference it makes (thanks _RaT_, you probably don't remember beating me over the head to do that...)

The giggest thing is that you can get the engine at the right speed with the wheels at the right speed and the pto at the right speed all at the right time!

And the resale value will likely exceed the $800 diff.

That doesn't sound like a bad trade in value from the dealer on the 790, but I could be missing something!

FR,

Around here the market for used 790's is strong. Probably the same where you are, so getting 10-11k or more out of it shouldn't be a problem.

I switched from gears to hydro when I got the kubota L3410. MAN, what a difference! Doing almost anything it is far superior to a gear or reverser transmission. The only place where gears are better is for heavy field work. You can't beat the ability to set your speed by gear/rpm.

My advice is to get the hydro, but have them throw in a quick connect pallet fork. (either "free" or at dealer cost) You have good leverage now, and that is not a lot to ask.

On Deere vs Kubota. Both are good, but I like the Kubota better. Smoother hst. And I like the boomarang HST control better for loader work. MUCH quicker for me to just flex my ankle and not have to move my foot over. Sounds pretty dumb, but it works! Drive them both and see which one your wife likes best.

Does your trade-in at the JD dealer reduce your sales tax on the new tractor?
If so, add that savings to the $10k he's offering.
