Need some painting advice

I have a Kaw Mule 2510 with cab that needs painted red for the fire dept...I found out we have some red paint on hand (older stuff has not been froze)
My question is is there any thing I need to do the the metal and plastic on the unit before I paint? I does not need to be a professional job but want to make sure it sticks well enough for a while. Oh it is army green right now.

DDT, I,m no painter, what I have done to prep materials to spray as you mentioned, I used 600 grit wet sandpaper and keep surface wet while sanding area.

This will give good adhesion for the new paint, HTH.

Red can be a difficult color to cover in one coat and get an even shade. You may want to prime gray first after sanding and cleaning. Don't know why, but gray seems to prep better for red.
