Was hauling some crushed limestone in my 97 F250HD today and had a blow out on the freeway. The side wall let loose and boy let me tell you how much fun it was to change the tire along the freeway with 4200LBS of dirt in the back!! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I need the wise TBNrs for some advice. I have 235 85 r16 and want to get a tire that is rated for heavy loads. I would also like the tread to be a good cross for dirt, snow, and just highway crusing. Any suggestions would help me so much.
I figure since the remaining tires are at about 30% and winter is coming, now would be the time to invest in some new tires.

You definately want 10 ply tire. I am no great Firestone fan but the steeltrex Radials that came on my '02 Duramax were great tires. Still running at 58k when I traded it in. After hearing what others had to say on a truck forum about tires I think they are the best value. The actually cost less than most of the others and last longer. While many do well in the lighter rateings I have heard poor things about the BF Goodrich and cooper 8 and 10 plys. Most claim 30k mile average life. The others I might consider although pricy are the Michelins. They looked like a very nice tire at approx $100 more per set. Dave

I buy a lot of tires at work and there is one thing I have found.
The best tires in the world have Goodyear written all over them.

I use nothing but Michelins on the road. I would use them on the tractor but since it's a skid steer and the tires are usually cut up before they're wore out there isn't much advantage there.

I have almost forty thousand on Lucy and judging the future by the past the Michelins will give me about sixty thousand miles. And that's carrying a constant fourteen thousand pound load.

I think the Michelin XPS Traction is exactly the tire for you. There is also a highway version called the RIB, it will get 80,000 miles easily with typical rotation every 10,000 miles. It's still by far my favorite tire ever built. It comes in 235/ 85-16. It's almost bullet proof. It weighs more then any tire in the same size. Has steel in the sidewalls, has extra steel in the tread and is so tough that the only thing that ever got into mine was a pair of barber scissors I picked up at the dump. Rat...

My '01 Dodge 2500 came with Michelin LTX. On our old Camaro we ran V rated Michelins, and now have them on the Jag. They last well, even the sticky tires on the Camaro. I would get another set for the car or truck definietely.

I have BF Goodrich Rugged Long trail 17" E rated on my Cummins Dodge now. That's only because my Dad is a Dodge parts guy, and got me an awesome deal on a set of alloys with tires, takeoffs from a new '03 Dodge.

Next tires I will go back to Michelin, unless I get another takeoff set.

I will note that these BF Goodrich have handled better than any I have had before. On my old trucks, I had Mud Terrains, in D rating. They were too flexy on the side walls when hauling. These E rated though, are MUCH better.

I had a set on Goodrich TA radials on my last truck. I had good luck with and they come in an "E" load rating in the 235/85R16 for your truck.

Thanks to all for the info.......

Is there a site that defines all the ratings and codes you find on tires?

I like the Michelin tire...as well as the Goodyear name brands. There sure are alot of choices.

Also be aware that the treadwear is strictly for each manuafactuer. In other words. If Michelin has a treadwear on one tire at 100 and another at 300. The 300 can be expected to have about 3 times the treadlife of the 100. However, it has no cerrelation to a treadwear of 300 to a BF Goodrich for example.
