Tractor
Jd 2520
About a year ago I bought my first tractor. I got a new 2520 with a loader and backhoe. It has been very useful. I mainly use it to plow the driveway and my wife uses it to clean up after the horses. I also fix our dirt driveway and other misc. stuff around the house. I debated when I purchased it whether or not to get the backhoe. First off I was disapointed with how small the backhoe was, it just doesn't reach far enough to really be helpful. It works well to dig ditches and what not though. I have decided I don't use it enough to justify having it. So I am thinking about trading in the whole package and getting a bigger tractor without a backhoe. Just curious if anyone know roughly how much they would give me for a trade in. I owe just around $20K. It is in very good shape and only has 40 hrs on it. Mainly I am need some help deciding what to get. I don't want to spend much more than $20k out the door. I want just a loader for attatchments. I really like the size of the 4105 tractor and I think it suits my needs and than some. For some reason the actually size of it attracts me more than a 3000 series. I would like to stay green, but after looking at some kubotas online the bigger L-series seem like a better deal. I haven't called the dealer yet to see what they would give me or looked at any tractors. Just trying to do some homework before I go and talk to them. I just feel like if I'm not using the backhoe, I might as well get a bigger tractor without a backhoe and have the same or a lower payment.

Thanks

My guess is that if you use the John Deere online tool to "build" your tractor and take 25% off the full retail you'd be close to what you could likely get in a private sale. The thing working against you with potential buyers is the chance for them to get a full factory warranty and subsidized financing by buying new. Therefore your price has to be attractive enough to overcome those two things. If you trade it in, the dealer will have to price it low enough to attract a buyer (again, same reasons), plus they need to cover their costs for overhead and make a profit. Good luck with your sale/trade.

Just sell the hoe. Probably get close to what you paid for it

When I was looking at trading my tractor at most places can give a price over phone with just a few e-mailed pictures to them. Saves the hassle of towing it all over the place and just make sure,to take a picture of the bad spots if it has any,so nothing changes when you get there.
They play the same game as car salesman show you giving more for trade but charging more for new tractor.First thing they usually ask is will you be trading anything in before they even give price on new unit and will ask what were you thinking you needed on your tractor before they work the numbers. That way your happy with what they are giving for trade-in,while adjusting there numbers on new tractor. All fun and games:thumbsup:

As psdx said, financing, warranty are two things working against you for someone buying new to overcome to buy used. Then they may want it optioned slightly different and want that "new, I'll be the first/only user" So I think it would take more than 25% off sticker to trade.

That said, I think the original dealer would give more for it, they made their money on it once and want to keep you coming back. Also their sales people are familar with their own brand and have an easier time selling it.

Non JD dealer may not want it on his lot. If a customer likes it better than what he sells, they may then decide to go to a JD dealer and look at more green ones.

Go price a new one. See what they will do in trade. If it's a deal breaker, ask if they have any leads they can give you for someone looking for a used unit like yours. Tell them you have sell outright for more so you can buy that new one. If your salesman lines you up with someone give him a finder's fee.

I would love to find a used backhoe for my 2520

Selling the backhoe off may be the better way to go. There are more people looking for a backhoe attachment for the popular tractors and I would expect less conflict about interest rates on attachments. I would check with Deere to see if they would allow the dealer to sell it and apply the proceeds to your loan.

Trading up can be costly, we see alot of this in TBN and I for one try to push for the larger machines if I think that is what the poster needs. Usually this is ignored and the new tractor buyer is trading up very soon. If you do go ahead and trade up I would make certain you get the right tractor the second time around.

So I just got my first price. The dealer said they would give me 19,500 for my tractor which is pretty good, but wants $27,000 for a 4105 with 300cx loader, 73" heavy duty bucket, r4 tires and forward work lights. Sounds to me like he is about 5k too high on that price. Does that sound about right? I have another dealer I am waiting to hear from which is the one I originally bought from
