JD 317
Hi all!!
I have an older JD 317 that is in need of some TLC in order to be usable again. Typical stuff- gas tank, hydraulic lines replaced, tune up- basic stuff. My dilemma is this, is this unit better RESTORED and used , or simply brought back into service by any means possible? I also have a push-pull blade for this unit. Budget is of course limited, I would like to be able to use this critter to actually MAKE money(grading drive ways, bushhogging fields etc) Any ideas? Thanks in advance!!!

For me if I were going to do it, might as well do it right or don't do it at all.

How's trany? If in any doubt can get pricey if you do all that work and first driveway you do,you end up with a transmissions parts yard sale right there.

To the best of my knowledge, trans is OK..... When I was gifted the JD it ran and generally worked- but 18 or so months sitting isnt good for NEW equipment.... much less something 25-30 years old. Anybody aware of JD vintage parts sources? Sourcing parts and minimal budget may make my decision for me, it may end up a rework instead of RESTORE

either way you go good luck still good to see older models being used in 25 years I don't think you will see any tractors from this generation in operation .all made to replace not repair:ashamed:

Basically you have few options but I would look at a similar sized machine (a new one) and get the price of it,,, now can you make it (the old one) as usable/reliable for less coin? Is the coin you saved worth a month or three of your time and frustration/enjoyment? If so, used is for you, if no, then new is for you.

I had the same question/decision this summer,,,,,, I wanted a new X530/540, with a blower, blade, price,,, better part of 10,000. I was able to aquire a 70's GT free in decent condition, repaired/replaced everything that was an issue, rebuilt the engine, replaced tires, repainted, new decals, bought a like new blower, like new blade,,,, end cost, around 1,500 due to Very very fortunate shopping.

Is the old machine as nice to use as a new one,,,,, no its not, I much prefer a foot controlled hydro, the new one doesnt vibrate, the new one isnt as loud and a few other things,,,,,, However for the cash savings I would do it again, I dont use it everyday if I did it might be a different story, but if I can do the same work in similar time with 1500 as 10000 Im pickin 1500 everytime.
