Nice forum...

I have a question about a LX172. It has the Kawasaki engine with an ignitor

The symptoms are the engine starts cutting out, back firing, and nearly stalls when the blades are engaged. When not engaged it runs ok.

How it behaves to me is like other tractors I've messed around with before...the coil. Cub lo boy would run great until the coil got hot.

Having said that all the research i have done on this suggestions i see people talking about never seem to point to the coil.

What I see is the simialr questions that are answered never seem to be confirmed that is was in fact the problem.

This is behaving like a vehicle from the 70's or eary 80's with a regular 12 volt coil. Think late 70's ford or chevy trucks when climbing a hill. It starts missing or losing power.

Most times it would be a weak coil and starting to break up or the fuel pump.

Yet I never see a cpil being mentioned on forums with a simiar question posted by someone...but I echo again it never seems to be confirmed that is wasnt a coil.

Just FYI...
I eliminated the fuel shut off solenoid in the carb....no change.

I have the shroud off now and would like to test the coil. Is there a way or any specs to test the coil?

The backfiring is pointing me to a coil. In my experience more times than not backfiring usually points to electrical.

Thanks in advance to any and all replies.

:welcome:
Welcome to TBN

I would not suspect the ignition system. It is a self contained transistor operated ignition.

What you are describing sounds like you have some dirt in your carb or you have an intake manifold leak. Usually ignition problems show up after things get heated up.

My suggestion is to remove, thoroughly clean the carb and re-install. When you have the carb off, check for broken gaskets or loose screws on the manifold. By thoroughly cleaning, don't mean spray some cleaner on the outside.

I'd try a spark plug before anything else. I can get you the coil test specs, but it won't find the source of your issue unless it is way out of spec. Igniters fail far more frequently than the coils by the way.

I have a PDF of the engine manual, shoot me your email and it's on the way
