need help with 743 fuel filter

my bobcat was choking out on me so i came to the verdict that the fuel filter needed to be changed, which it did. i changed out the fuel filter and cleaned out the pick up stem or whatever inside the filter. i installed all new gaskets all around the filter and stem, and replaced the old filter with the new filter just as it was basically drawn out on the new filter. common since mostly, but obviously something was wrong. the bulb on the bottom of the filter exploded after squeezing the primer bubble several times and turning the engine over two different attempts to crank the bobcat. what is my malfunction guys?

when you say "bulb on the bottom of the filter" do you mean the glass fuel bowl?

I just attempted to change the filter on mine, and dropped the darn glass fuel bowl and it chipped just enough so as not to seal any more, ive ordered another glass bowl, and will be here on Thurs. however the parts guy told me they usually replace the original filter housing and use a spin on filter... any one done this?

forgit the glass bowl filters, buy a modern filter housing for a screw on filter, like for a S300, $50.00 and the 2 elbows, it will bolt right up, just bought one last week.

i was going to change my glass bowl for a spin of filter but after some thought and some issues I had with water I decided it is a pain in the butt I will live with as I can see if there is water in my fuel and it separates it nicely. I broke mine last winter when I had water in it so instead of taking it inside I had a bright idea of trying to heat it with a torch. I was glad they had one in stock and was only a few bucks.
