I purchased a 10' brush hog. Unknown maker or age. Likely old since it is made with thick steel and channel iron.

I have the old style slip clutch that is mounted to the brush hog. I removed the set screw from the side of the nut and I cannot get the nut off to replace the disks. I have tried all the tricks that I have. I heated that nut red hot and hit it with my 1" impact. I got about 1/4" of a turn once. i also welded a square tube to the nut to hit it with a hammer hoping the lever would give me the leverage needed to break the nut loose. No luck.

After too many hours jacking around with this I decided to buy a modern style clutch. The shaft in the brush hog is 12 splines. I have searched the end of the internet and all the local farm shops with no luck.

Anybody have any suggestions? Anyone know where I can get a 12 spline shaft to slip over my brush hog gear box shaft?

Help!

You can likely just take the u-joint out and use the old yoke. I have done that a few times and sometimes it is the only way. You just have to go to Napa or the like and ge them to order the correct U-joint. Ed

Just wanted to provide a update. I searched and called everywhere. Could not find the 12 spline coupling. I found out that the hog is a Howse brand. I called them and the parts are discontinued for that 12 spline. They sell a complete new drive shaft with CV joints that adapts to this hog for a very pricey $600. It was highway robbery but they had it and I needed it. It was suppose to be a direct fit. The shaft was about 3" too long. I extended out my draw bar by modifying it. It is now up and running. Good thing I got the hog for a great price and now I know why.

It looks like there are places that make the fitting for the old style clutch in the standard 6 point but not the 12 point. I was able to get the nut off the clutch but when it finally came off the threads came with it and it was no longer usable.

You can trivially cut down a PTO shaft that is to long. EverythingAttachments & probably many others on YouTube have video on how to do so. MUCH harder to cut one longer. ;-p

Yeah I originally was going to cut it down however it has the protective sleeve around the shaft and I didn't feel like taking it apart to cut it down. Also like you say you cant make it longer again and given that I might use this on other tractors, I didn't want to risk cutting it too short. Instead, I modified my tongue on the tractor. I welded a 2.5x2.5 receiver tube so I can add a standard 2" ball mount. I realize that this might not be up for the stress of pulling a plow but that it not something I ever anticipate doing with this tractor. The standard receiver tube allows me to interchange all the ball mounts that I currently have and I can quickly change out for the height and ball that I might need. As for the brush hog that mounts via 1" pin, I will simply use a ball mount with no ball which will give me the extra few inches on the draw bar that I need. Also the further the hog is behind the tractor the more tire clearance I will have. The pics below are with my tri ball mount installed and the draw bar set to the shortest pin position.

I can understand why you did what you did but if you ever move a trailer with a ball on a three point hitch you'll never go back to a ball on the draw bar again. It's so nice to just pick up the trailer and lift the three point and move the trailer.
