1964 Ford 2000

Hey guys,
I recently inherited a Ford 2000 tractor that I'm going to get running to help me begin to homestead. I am having trouble identifying the tractor based off the serial numbers I'm seeing. I'm most interested in the year, and if it's gas or diesel. Any help you guys can give will be greatly appreciated!

I don't know why, but some pictures posted on this forum I cannot open.

I'm new here, so it may be how I attached it. Here are the numbers:

You could probably smell inside the fuel tank, but the spark plug check is the best method.

Spark plugs or else... look for an injector pump on the side of the engine block with fuel lines running to the injectors (diesel), as compared to seeing a carburetor sitting on top of an intake manifold (gas).

Thanks so much guys! It definitely has plugs, so I guess gas it is. Now I'd just like to narrow down the date. I found several sites like tractor data that show the codes, but it doesn't make sense based off the numbers I have. Does anyone know the difference between the top and bottom numbers?

Looks like a 1964 model based on the serial number. If you can, post a picture from the side that shows the whole tractor.

Scroll down to the thousand series:

The top number decodes the model number. The lower number is the serial number.

Count the number of spark plugs...I'm guessing it will have four, which makes it the earlier thousand series. The later thousand series had three cylinders and a more square shape (totally new design) hood etc. From the pic in your avatar it looks like the earlier series (still good machines BTW).

Yep, that's the earlier thousand series, and looks to be very solid, so you've got a great start! There probably isn't a part you can't easily find for that machine (not that they usually need much) and that keeps the prices reasonable. There are some true experts here on the older Fords, so you've come to the right place

Thanks so much!! I'm very excited to get her running! So far I've got the hood off and started taking off layers of dirt and grease. Next is cleaning up the rats nest of wiring. Have you seen anyone post a schematic for the '64?

I haven't seen one, but it might be worth posting that question in the Ford/NH section here. Generally speaking, it's probably worth your while to buy a shop manual, and parts manual for the tractor. I think you can get the digital version pretty inexpensive now (maybe $20 or less each)....they'll save you a lot of time trying to find part numbers, etc.

I found a manual for the later models, I'll keep looking for mine. In the meantime I found what I think should be very close to a good schematic. I'm going to just go through and run all new wires, it's a mess lol. I attached a screenshot of the schematic, if it looks way wrong let me know.

I can't help on the schematic, but here's a link to a reprint of the factory shop and parts manuals for your tractor. The shop manual is reasonable at $50, but the parts manual is a bit pricey at $115. I think both are worth it, but it might be worth looking for a digital copy...usually those are like $25 and you can print only the pages you need to (if any).
