Then the VR can be ruled out because it wouldnt keep it from turning over. If the vr was bad and everything else was good, the tractor would start and run horrible or quickly die.

The VR has nothing to do with how the engine runs, only regulates and in some cases rectifies alt. output. If bad it will only prevent the battery from charging. I would charge the battery to 13 volts before proceeding.

The battery is out of my truck. The voltage drop is coming from the jumper cables. I had the starter tested and sure enough she is dead. Im looking into rebuilding it before buying a new one

yep a healthy resting battery is 12.6 volts or so. 12v really is a weak battery like less that 40% If i remember correctly.

there is several posts on here about workable starters from amazon/ebay. and even parts stores. The amazon ones work and are like $100

What I have been doing is hooking up the battery to my truck with my truck off. I let it run today and it was 13.4v on at the hot post at the starter. I had my starter tested today and failed. I tore it apart to see if it was something I could fix. One of the seals were bad and there was a decent amount of corrosion in there. I went through and cleaned it all off by lightly sanding it with an emory cloth. Got everything looking it should greases up the tip of the shaft resealed it and put it back together. I know there is a lot of variables but everything was making good contact and the shaft didn't have any lateral play in it.

Put it back in the tractor, hooked it back up and retested. I had 13.4 volts at the hot post and only 11 at the terminal that comes from the switch. And of course 11 at the post going to the starter. I am going to retest the black and white cable at the starter with it not connected to see if I am getting 13.4 volts. If I do then that should mean my switch is operational. Do you guys think its worth replacing the solenoid to see if that is he problem?

did you check the starter to see if it would spin over B-4 re installing it back on the tractor ?

Why are you not talking the hot end of the jumper cable and jumping directly to the post on the solenoid to rule out all of that other stuff, like switches and wireing?
