Ah Ha! You do not have a two stage clutch. You have 2 clutches. The PTO clutch, as you know works off the lever(s) on the left hand side of the operator's seat (if its anything like the 4 WD versions). PUSH THE CLUTCH ALL THE WAY IN AND TRY IT. Better still, engage your PTO, have someone watch its rotation and push the clutch all the way in. Let us know if it stops when you go all the way down. BobG in VA

Sorry, my mistake. I double checked and of course you have that there "live continuous PTO". I'm not sure based on what you've said, can you turn off the PTO??? If you can, does this make any difference. Since you are a mechanic I won't even ask if you've checked the trans gear oil level.. In 150 hrs the gear meshing should have "loosened" enough that shifting into neutral should be no different than shifting a truck trans. What is it about the SM that you don't trust???BobG in VA

Just taking some guesses, I dont want to offend anyone, but:

1. It sounds to me like the clutch isnt adjusted right. If the tractor does not roll when you push it in on a hill, then the clutch has to still be engaged, so maybe its not adjusted properly in the pedal linkage or elsewhere. Something you want want to look into as you will burn your clutch up prematurely if this is the case.

2. Is a brake sticking or is the parking brake on? (Just curious)

Hope you get it figured out.

fish_whisperer,

Trying to understand your problem here. Are you saying that the clutch is sticking when you depress it and it only comes back when you move the gearshifter?

here are his tractor specs, says live pto which means to me on all the time.

If the clutch is sticking and it's adjusted properly may be a lubrication issue. The specs don't say whether it is a dry clutch or not. It says it's dual, which I'm not really certain what that means.

It definately sounds like the throwout bearing is bad or going bad. Could be caused by many things, defective from start, pressure plate not exact, etc. Maybe your clutch is not adjusted exactly right. Could also be a slightly warped clutch. Really hard to diagnose without driving it. Has the clutch ever been really hot?
Given your description I would not be overly concerned. With 150 hours it's nowhere near what I'd say broken in. Mine is just getting broken in at 400. You have 2 years left on the warranty, let the shop and owner both know your problem and make them understand that you expect the problem to be fixed if it gets worse.

dan smith explained to me that when it rolls back it changes the pressure on the front of the gears to the back and can make it stick,,,,,,,,,,,"solution" use the brakes when comming to a stop, i know this sounds stupid,, too simple but it works, especially if i give it just enough brake pressure to make the tractor slightly rock like he explained, it works perfectly, keeps the back pressure off the gear and shifts smoothly. i rarely use brakes before, now i will. so a slight change in operator habits........problem solved........
