I am looking to buy a 1993 model 870. The dealer rebuilt the motor because the tractor went into a pond. It has a manual transmission, and a loader. Its a 4wd. What would be a fair price, and are there other issues that could crop up from being driven into the water?

I would think that the thing I would think about is the electrical harness and all the wiring etc. Everything that I have ever heard about cars etc going through floods has been that the electrical always has problems unless you replace it all. I would think on this tractor that might not be too difficult to do.

Rob is basically correct. Although, I would include everything that is electric as being suspect and likely prone to failure.

Alternator, starter, starter selenoid, fuel shutoff selenoid. That said, the dealer may have replaced some/all of those components with the overhaul.

Definitely ask and see if the repairs are detailed in writing - invoice.

Any chance that water could have gotten into the transmission? If so, there might be evidence of that on the dipstick.

The 870s are good tractors, but not pond proof;)

If it were me, unless he's offering thousands less than others for the expected repairs, I'd find a 870 that hasn't got wet. There's just to many issues that may have happened to it that you could be having problems the entire time you own it.

Good advice, listen to Martian.

Thank you for the advice. So far the dealer isn't willing to budge on the price anyway. So I'll probably walk away.

i had sold mice like i said for 10,500. It looked near new...great paint, no body damage. Had the front end repaired cause of defective JD gear issues with the Yanmar font end.

They are asking 10,900 for it

$10.9k is way too much. Being in a pond I'd struggle paying $7k for it.

EDIT: That is one great looking 870 to grs!
