i've checked at lowes and home depot: plus walmart: and none of those have a sign that says "no solicitors". (i can spell, but i just can't type: what i think and what gets typed ain't always the same), well, actually, i can't spell either..maybe thats such a popular sign, they stay sold out around here?

I'm going to take a very unpopular position here and suggest that these folks are generally hard working people who deserve, at very least, a friendly hand shake and a "no thank you, I'm not interested."

The last college kid that came here to sell books was invited to my deck to have a cold drink. Turns out he was an aeronautical engineering student from out west trying to pay for his next year's tuition. I bought nothing from him, but probably brightened his day a bit anyway.

That guy left your house thinking:

"Darn-it. I thought he was going to buy something since he was so cordial and hospitable"...I wasted a dad-gum hour there!!!!

I see 'no solicitors' signs at staples and office depot back inthe business section by the consumer grade /cash registers ( for sale ).. etc.

We have them here at the office.. seems to NOT work.. as I have to walk salesmen outside and point at the sign for them to get the hint..

thanks, i have not looked at Staples: if the sign just keeps 10% of them away it will be worth it.

There's a fellow not too far from here who has a hand painted sign at the end of his driveway that says "keep the **** out".

I would assume it works, but the sign doesn't really "go" with the neighborhood, if you know what I mean. :(

Yeah good luck- when I lived in town I had a "No Soliciting" sign by the front door, easily readable before you ascended the steps. Didn't work. Had to point out to many the sign who said "Oh...I'm not soliciting, I'm selling whatever ;)
At my remote mountain place we have about a half mile shared private drive posted with "Private Drive/No Outlet" and then when entering my parcel there are "No Trespassing" signs....and still have had people come right by them, obviously thinking it didn't apply to them for some reason.

I've heard that very same line.. "Oh I'm not soliciting.. i just have this for sale..."

What is someone possibly selling that I couldn't purchase or find a service myself when I needed it?

"Thank goodness you finally stopped by, my roof has been leaking for years and I have been waiting patiently for a roofer to come by to offer me their services. Where do I sign?"

If someone has a no tresspassing or no solicitors sign up, and a 'hard working' person intrudes anyway.. not only is it not likely he won't make a sale.. he'll also probably elicit (deserved) anger. After all.. if i -wanted- visitors.. the sign would say " welcome, come in "

That's just simple logic. Why waste effort and resorces in areas where they have little chance of coming to fruition? A door to door salesman has about as much luck as a telemarketer with me... and it's a ver -epsilon- percentage that is approaching -0-.
