Jinman mentioned this years ago. 4WD braking. I thought it was some of the best advice I ever read. Keeps the pucker factor to a minimum.

Wow, just yesterday, I was going down my driveway...steep, with four old railroad ties on the bucket forks. Soon as I started down I applied the brakes. I slid almost all the way down. Lucky for me I was able to somewhat control the direction of the slide. I was in 2 wheel drive on my L3130. Guess I learned a little more in this post. Thanks to all.....

Thats why I leave my tractor in 4WD all the time.

If you got 4WD engaged that can help in those situations, for sure.

But you can get in that exact situation if you *don't* have four wheel drive as well. The thing to do if it happens on a 2WD tractor (which includes 4WD, but not engaged) is to push in the clutch! Then pump the brakes like you would in any sliding/skidding situation. The trick is to try to get the rear wheels turning enough to straighten out the tractor - while keeping your speed as slow as possible, of course...

That's a good way to tear something up. If you hit the brakes and lock the rear wheels then try to engage 4x4 with the front wheels turning your going to break something very expensive...
