I don't remember taking a driving test to get my license, so maybe similar policy here. Got my license in 1966, parents had a '63 Impala at the time, so if I did have to take a road test that's what I would have used.It was a 73 Impala; not really a DMV test, but in north Idaho at the time if you passed the driver's ed class in high school, that constituted for the practical. Just show up at the sherriff's office with your passing grade and a twenty and you're good to go.
On-road part of driver's ed was that summer, classroom part was earlier, during the school year. IIRC, it was part of the school curriculum, not a private company.
Training cars were provided by the local Chevy dealer...Biscaynes, 2 were 6 cyl automatics, the other a V8 with 3 in the tree. I got the manual shift car. Instructor asked if anyone had driven standard, I had, so I got to go first. He said don't be afraid to give it a little gas, so I stepped on it. Left probably 10' of rubber in the HS parking lot! His reply was something to the effect of "not quite that much".
Dunno about where you lived, but we had learner's permits, where you could drive at 15 and a half as long as a licensed driver over 18 was with you.The inspector asked me how I learned to drive in one day. I told him I live on a farm and have been driving there for a while. He didn’t look convinced. Actually, my brothers owned a garage and from about 15 on I would go with one of them to pick up a customers car and drive my brothers car back to the shop.
