In 1963, in my Dad's 1963 F250 4x4. 4 speed manual tranny...and the Pennsylvania State Trooper serving as the examiner was a short stubby guy who really had to stretch to get into the cab! Loved that truck...this is my graduation pic in 1964 next to the truck, wearing my National Honor Society colors.

The car was a 1957 blue and white Ford Ranch Wagon. It had no power steering and parallel parking was a bear. Anyhow I got my first license in 1962. It was kind of a rite of passage back then. Yes, at 79 I'm still driving but my current car has power steering.
I bought my fist car at 12 but it was still my project Model A.

I decided not to drive my 57 Ford for the test… no seatbelts, no power steering, etc…

No seatbelts equals no road test I later learned.

72 Skylark turned out to be the safe bet…

I went to take my test in PA, in ‘63, 1 day after my birthday. The test was on a closed course at the police barracks.

We had a significant snow storm the day before, and they had to plow the course. Well, they only plowed an 8’ wide lane with large berms next to the road.

The inspector asked me how I learned to drive in one day. I told him I live on a farm and have been driving there for a while. He didn’t look convinced. Actually, my brothers owned a garage and from about 15 on I would go with one of them to pick up a customers car and drive my brothers car back to the shop.

I started around the course and right after I made a sharp turn tight to the berm he said STOP! He got out, walked to the front of the car scraped some of the snow off the centerline and said . “You crossed the centerline, you fail”!

Went back the next day and passed.

Not sure what car I was driving, but it might have been my fathers ‘39 Plymouth.

It was a 73 Impala; not really a DMV test, but in north Idaho at the time if you passed the driver's ed class in high school, that constituted for the practical. Just show up at the sherriff's office with your passing grade and a twenty and you're good to go.
