While I did not ask for an alternative, alternatives are always appreciated. Thanks. That's what engineering, and creative repair of old things, is all about. The tractor had a narrower belt when I got it, and it was indeed overheating. I found the belt was loose, so I tighened it. It worked for 15 minutes and snapped. I suspect a new, narrow belt would work for a while.

Addendum- Now I see I have a drip from the water pump onto the belt, which I bet is not helping. I assume that the ONLY answer to that is a new pump. Any creative alternatives out there?

that drip is the pee hole. It is telling you a seal is letting loose. In an emergency, say.. you needed to finish plowing that week.. you could dray and glob the hole up with rtv.. finish work.. then rebuild / replace the pump.

Can't let it go long. Generally a seal failure is either evidence of a bearing failure ( that lets the seal wear).. or is in advance of a bearing failure.. as the bearing fails after the seal fails. In either case.. you let it go long enough and the fan gets wobbly.. a little more time goes by then the fan suddenly flies forward and cuts a nice round hole thru the 300$ radiator core... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

your choice on how / when to fix.
