Eric, how big is your spread? how much clear space do you have around the burn piles?

The new parcel is just over a 1/2 mile of lakeshore on a 30ish acre, western-facing peninsula. I have a good 50-100 feet around the burn piles. I'm going to start planing conifers this spring.

100 feet may not be enough, if there are any old dead trees in range.

I will have some substantial burn piles. I'm gonna put them as far away from other trees as possible.

This is why we burn everything up here in the winter when it is 10°F outside with 3" or more snow on the ground and little wind.

I had a 500,000 BTU weed burner going full blast for ten minutes in order to get the fire started on the pile in the video.

Anyway, I'm in agreement: if we didn't have winter burning conditions, or I was burning during spring, summer or fall, in addition to a burning permit, I would not want to set a pile that big on fire, since the pile was at its peak it was maybe 40' long and at least 8' high.

I use this site for the wind forecast: WindAlert

The dead tree 150 feet away, started burning from the heat radiated from the fire, not the wind.

I decided that winter is done with and dropped the Hiniker plow and McKee blower off and rigged the tractor for work hooking my Cat 2 SpeeCo Quick Hitch back on and popping on the wicked root grapple. I've got a dozen or so piles of material to gather together into my original burn site not to mention blade work that needs to be done.

I needed my box scrapper so I drove my tractor over two the new parcel. What a joy it is to run without a heavy attachment on the three point. My Kioti felt "nimble" and in two hours I made a 8' by 20' burn pile before nabbing my box scrapper and chasing back home.
