So in rambling on, here I think I have owned and used some of the oldest "iron" on here.:)

James K0UA

Wow! Baudot code. . . I'd completely forgotten that one. Boy-oh-boy! We've sure hijacked Eddie's thread about his new computer. Hey Eddie! How about some computer pictures? What I'd love is to see you on a laptop surfing TBN while out in your highrise deer blind.;)

Hardly any mention of Apple?

The first home computer I bought was a used was the Apple //

I was able to sell it for 50% more than I paid, got $1200 for it.

The reason I sold is it only had the 40 column screen and I wanted the new 80 column //e

Wife and I know all about that(stock). It did break 25 last week...

All my time was in Folsom; I was born and grew up around here(still live only 15 miles away). My wife was in Santa Cruz for a while, then in Folsom. I have since been back there for a couple contracts.

Robert,

I worked at Intel in Oregon, and out in sales in sourthern California from 1991 to 2002.

I still have a grunch of shares from the employee stock plan that are STILL under water from those days...

Be well sir,
David

Lenovo makes a decent machine, and that is coming from a Mac guy.

I just crossed over to the dark side (iMac and Macbook Pro). I've been a PC guy since before Bill Gates first stole the GUI concept and programming from Wozniak. It's taking a while to get used to but, so far, it hasn't been as bad as I thought. I do like having all the space under my desk again and the totally silent 27" monitor. I just can't do that standard little keyboard that comes with the iMac. I'm using a Microsoft brand keyboard but have actually grown to like Apple's "magic mouse".

Good luck to you Eddie. My first venture in self employment was a basement computer builder. And that was literally what I did; build them in my basement! I sold that business when the internet came along. My customers seemed to fail to comprehend that buying a computer from me didn't mean that they got free lifetime internet training. That with the fact that half of the games sold for PC's were loaded with bugs that would bring down an entire system drove me nuts. People seemed to refuse to believe that the 200 games they installed on their system was causing it to lock up.

I think that brand has something to do with the remnants of IBM if I'm not mistaken. Back when IBM built their own computers, they generally were pretty darn good machines and most problems were software related....which is why I've made this leap of faith; believing my two kids in college and all their friends who all run Apple products. I'm yet to decide if it's just the "cool" thing to do and you have to have a Mac computer to be in the "in" crowd. With 5 kids, my two college age ones are the only ones with Mac products. The other 8 systems in my network are all still PC's.

My first computer was a Tandy 2000 from Radioshack. It didn't have a hard drive; only two disk drives. One for the application and one for the data files. It had the old "green screen" monitor - no graphics. The printer was the size of a large microwave oven and was so loud that when you hit "print" it was best to leave the room. It used a rollerball head like the IBM Selectric typewritter. I used it mainly for word processing (early Wordperfect, I think). It did have some games such as Pirate, but without graphics you had to type each direction line by line. If you got fustrated and typed in a curse word, it warned you not to use such language. I found out that it had a fairly large vocabulary of curse words. I paid about $2,500 for it.

I just installed IE9, and I have to say that it's a huge difference in how fast my pages open up. An hour ago, I was going along like normal. I saw the link on yahoo to upgrade to IE9 and thought I'd give it a try since I just bought my new computer.

The download went quickly, as did the install. The tabs at the top are different. Mostly they removed all the extra stuff and you just have the things you need. I'm excited about having a little bit more screen to see what I'm looking at, but I'm expecially excited about how fast everything is loading. It's like going for DSL to Cable internet!!!!!!

Xerox star had a GUI back in the 81-82 timeframe.... which was the basis for the Apple GUI.

Load Foxfire 8. It makes IE look clunky.

We have DSL, switched over to IE 9 on my newest laptop but could really tell almost no difference in how fast things loaded.
