The O-ring is at the shoulder that prevents your from pushing the strainer in too deep.

I found the old photo of my strainer that became cemented in place by the wrong O-ring so I destroyed the strainer getting it out:

Hmm TBN won't let me include that photo in this post. Here is its URL if anyone cares to see it

Like I said, the YM240 had evidence of some 'deferred maintenance' when I found it. :)

Just for fun another old photo I ran across while looking for that one. As I've mentioned before the dash lights were dangling by my knee instead of where they belonged. Back then there was a VN refurb wholesaler near me with a row of customer returns out back. That was a great source to buy minor parts I needed for my own refurb.

Again, TBN won't let me include that photo from a post 10 years ago, in this post. Here is its URL.

Haha Wow! Yeah that's pretty rough looking! So just pull it back off and use some good RTF around it? Mine literally looked brand new almost.

Ah! I have to drain all that new fluid I just put in! What if I parked it uphill? Could I save a bunch?

uh....NO! you would have to lift the front of the tractor up like 45 degrees or so!

I am sure you bought the 5 gallon pail of fluid. The tractor should have only held about 4 gallons so you should still have the bucket with a gallon in it. Get you a clean old gallon oil bottle or something and put the oil into that or just use the pail, take the top off put the bucket under the drain plug, pull the plug and let it all go back into the bucket. do your plate with the RTV how I said. Then put the top back on the fluid and fill the tractor back up again from that bucket. It wont hurt it, just drain it into your bucket, you can catch and reuse it. I do it all the time with fluids I would want to use again. I have even done it when I had to do a wheel seal or something, I caught what drained out and put it back in and made up the short fall from what got on the ground from a bucket that had extra in it.

Just catch the first quart in a washbasin or something so you can inspect for debris. That plate drains the spot that is not only lowest in the sump, it is also where anything sucked toward the strainer that can't get through the strainer is going to accumulate.

When I saw how filthy the strainer in my photo was, I flushed the transmission case pouring a little diesel in the top filler then pushing a rag on a stick in the strainer cavity, repeated a few times unit the rag and the diesel that poured out were clean.

If I were putting your fresh fluid right back into the tractor I would filter it to catch any debris that might have come out. I have a 'permanent' fine wire mesh coffee filter similar to the Mr Coffee paper filters, to set in my funnel - although I haven't used it for this. (No, it's dedicated to my shop, the coffee filter doesn't go back in the house! :p ) Come to think of it I suppose the fluid could be filtered the way as it drains out, but the volume might overwhelm that slow filter. Maybe loosen the plate and let it dribble for a half hour into the filter.

One of the old timers in this group posted that UTF doesn't really age but it accumulates water and debris. He said he lets his drained fluid sit and settle for a year or so then re-uses it, of course avoiding the dregs. I wouldn't put it in a Powershift with its precision-fit actuator pistons that are moved by hydraulic pressure but I don't see why this wouldn't work for a simple geared tractor.

Noted on the fluid!

Alright, well its all taken apart - just need water pump kit to arrive! That and fix the leak at the hydraulic screen and maybe then this thing will be ready to work! If that is all it took to get this running correctly and be reliable I would still say I got a great deal and look forward to using this for several years to make some food plots!

Alright drained fluid back into bucket, was able to save it all. O ring on hydraulic filter screen has stretched and needs to be replaced. Everything else will be here tomorrow and I'd really like to get it all back together. Where is my best bet to take it and try to find one?

Barr from ordering the right one I'd take it with me to a hardware store like Ace or who ever. I know they have a good selection of o-rings, even metric. Might luck out.

There is an Ace right up the road. I'll take the screen and see if I can find something that fits well. If not I'll just have to order one I guess.
